Email communication will be accepted only from VCCS student email accounts. Except over holidays, students are expected to read course announcements and check their email accounts regularly.

COURSE INFORMATION Course Description: Introduces students to critical thinking and the fundamentals of academic writing. Through the writing process, students refine topics; develop and support ideas; investigate, evaluate, and incorporate appropriate resources; edit for effective style and usage; and determine appropriate approaches for a variety of contexts, audiences, and purposes. Writing activities will include exposition and argumentation with at least one researched essay. Credits: 3

Course Objectives: ENG 111, students will engage in and develop strategies for critical thinking, reading, and the writing processes; incorporate reading and experience into their writing processes; learn to conform their texts to instructor-specified document formats using appropriate technology; write for a variety of rhetorical purposes, employing a clear focus that guides choice of evidence, language, organization, and rhetorical and persuasive strategies; effectively apply a range of organizational and rhetorical strategies in their writing; appropriately employ grammatical and mechanical conventions; examine and analyze their experiences and reading as sources of material for writing; read, summarize, analyze, evaluate, and write about college-level texts; examine subjects from multiple perspectives and formulate and express their own perspective; apply their knowledge of composition to class discussions and peer-response workshops; learn and apply methods of research using primary and secondary sources in print and electronic formats; learn to identify the merit and reliability of sources and synthesize information from such sources; and write a minimum of 15-20 pages of finished, graded text (minimum 1,000 words incorporating research).

Course Text: No textbook is required; however, students will be expected to access and print materials provided by the instructor when posted to Blackboard.

Method of Instruction: Face-to-face meeting are held twice each week. Students will work with the instructor during these meetings to develop their writing and reading skills through lectures, classroom activities, online activities, group work, and one-on-one conferences.

Professionalism: Students will earn up credit by showing up on time and prepared with all materials printed and homework completed. During the class, students are expected to participate in the activities we will complete together. Failure to arrive on time, to be prepared, or to participate will result in loss of points. Students cannot earn back lost attendance/participation points. (~5 points per class)

Informal Writing & Homework: Informal journal activities will be assigned as homework and occasionally in class. Journals can be kept in a notebook with pockets or in a binder and should be labelled with the date and the assignment. Other homework assignments (online activities, research, etc.) will be assigned throughout the semester (~10 points per week)

Essays & Presentations: Students will complete four formal essays with revisions and two short presentations. Details about these essays and presentations will be given throughout the semester.

Midterm & Final Exam: The midterm and final exams will be opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills they have acquired over the course of the semester. Details will be provided.

Evaluation: Grades will be posted throughout the semester in the Blackboard gradebook. Grades/points for all class activities are final. The instructor will discuss a student's work to help him or her improve in the future, but the grade a student earns will not be negotiated.

Grade Scale (% of points out of 1000): A=100-90%, B=89-80%, C=79-70%, D=69-60%, F=59-0%

COURSE POLICIES

Attendance: Regular attendance is expected. Students who miss class will not be able to make up lost points. A student who misses three (3) consecutive classes or more than six (6) total classes will receive a failing grade for the course, unless he or she can provide documentation of extenuating circumstance. Working, while important, is not a valid reason for not attending class. Tardies or early departures will count as half absences. Communication with the instructor is expected for all absences.

Make-Up/Late-Work: Homework should be submitted to the instructor on the day it is due. Typically, late homework and make-up in-class assignments will not be accepted. Major assignments will receive a -10% penalty after the due date and will not be accepted after one week. If you will be unable to attend class, email the assignment to me or contact me ahead of time about making other arrangements. Anyone requesting an exception to this policy due to extenuating circumstances should contact me as soon after as possible. Extensions are not guaranteed. Students are responsible for files not received or that cannot be opened.

Course Withdrawal: Students who do not demonstrate satisfactory progress in the course by the withdrawal deadline will be withdrawn with a grade of W. Satisfactory progress for this course means a student has attended class regularly and successfully completed all assignment up to that date. Withdrawal Date: Oct. 27.

Penalties for Academic Honesty Violations: For unintentional plagiarism or other dishonesty, a first incidence may result in a required rewriting or a 0 for the assignment. For intentional plagiarism or dishonesty, the student will fail the course and a report will be filed in the Vice President's office. See the next section for more information on Academic Honesty.

Cellular Phones: Cell phones should be turned off before entering classrooms and stowed away throughout class, unless given permission by the instructor. Students observed to be in violation of this policy will lose participation credit for the day without additional warning.

Academic Honesty: At ESCC we expect the highest standards of academic honesty. Violations of academic honesty include the following:

? Cheating: This includes seeking or giving unauthorized help on examinations, papers, and other academic assignments.

? Plagiarism: This is defined as using another's words or ideas and representing them as one's own either knowingly or unknowingly. In other words, by not documenting ideas or putting quotations around exact phrasing and documenting the source, one is committing plagiarism.
