BA 495A - Internship in Business -- Guidelines 2015

BSB Program Internship Guidelines

INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) has developed the following guidelines for BA 495A (Internship in Business). This internship program is open to junior and senior Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) students who meet the qualifications of the program (see Qualifications for Internship). Penn State is implementing this internship program with the intention of enriching the academic and practical educational experience of Penn State BSB majors, while providing a valuable resource/service to the many organizations that comprise our service area.

All parties involved in the internship program should benefit from the experience. The successful completion of a business internship should provide the student with the practical, "hands-on" experience in the business world that today's employers require. The employer benefits from having the opportunity to bring into its environment a highly motivated intern who can contribute to the success of the business. The internship experience also provides the employer with the opportunity to screen a potential permanent employee. Penn State benefits from the contacts and goodwill generated from placing our students with local, regional, national, and international organizations.

GUIDELINES FOR BA 495A A student who has successfully completed all the requirements for BA 495A earns three to six credits for the experience.

Benefits of this Course for the Student 1. The student demonstrates a practical application of the business principles learned in previous courses. 2. The instructor learns about his/her students through a first-hand look at their work. 3. The student completes a written report of value, both to his/her employer and to his/her course work at Penn State. 4. Penn State benefits from the good relations developed through this interaction with the business community.

Student Responsibilities The student is responsible for meeting the following BA 495A qualifications:

Attain at least fifth (or higher) semester classification. Be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.00 or higher). Completion of all BASIC CORE courses and at least 18 credits of INTERMEDIATE CORE

and OPTION courses, specifically including BA 321 and BA 322. 1

Completion of at least 1 credit of academic internship preparation at the 400 level. If the student receives an internship offer from an employer without having met all the

qualifications for an internship, Penn State reserves the right to deny academic credit for the internship. Obtain approval for the specific internship position from the campus internship coordinator before initiating the internship.

The student must successfully accomplish the following to receive academic credit for BA 495A: Ensure that he/she meets all the qualifications for an internship before applying. Provide a current resume/portfolio. Secure an offer from an approved employer. Completing BA 495A may adversely affect a student's financial aid. Every student should consult with the Financial Aid Officer on campus before registering for BA 495A. Read and sign the required forms within this packet. Successfully complete between 40 and 45 internship and academic work hours for each credit earned during the semester in which the student is registered for the internship. Maintain a journal of experience within the University's course management system and then prepare a final written report, 8 to 12 pages in length, describing the company, your duties and responsibilities and an evaluation of the experience. Receive an overall satisfactory evaluation from the employer and instructor. An evaluation form used by the company may be substituted if desired. This form must be sent to the instructor when completed by the student's supervisor.

Employer Responsibilities The employer must agree to the following stipulations:

Engage the student in a position suitable for a business major that will allow the student to gain practical and academic business experience.

The employer agrees to provide the intern with between 40 and 45 internship work hours per semester for each credit earned.

Read and sign the Employer's Liability Agreement. The employer will provide Worker's Compensation and general liability insurance for the

intern. A certificate of insurance evidencing Worker's Compensation and Employer's Liability and general liability may be required prior to the beginning of the internship. Penn State is responsible for dismissal of a student for academic or disciplinary reasons, but the employer maintains the right to remove a student from an internship if the student does not comply with the rules, policies, procedures, or standards of the employer. In the event of a student's removal by the employer, the instructor at Penn State must be notified immediately. Both Penn State and the employer will determine jointly if and when a student should be permitted to return to the employer to continue the internship.
