Students will work extensively to improve their reading and writing skills through both informal and formal assignments. One of the major components of the course is incorporating research within writing. In addition, students will develop verbal communication skills through discussions and presentations. Students’ skills will be assessed in various ways, including tests, quizzes, essays, and projects. Grades are calculated using total points. Homework assignments will make up approximately ten percent of marking period grade. Below is a breakdown of the types of graded assignments you will have: Quizzes (100 points): Four per marking period on assigned literature and Springboard topicsSadlier-Oxford Vocabulary (100 points): Five quizzes per marking periodEmbedded Assessments (300 points): Each unit contains assessments that are incorporated to check students understanding of the skills presented in each unit. Each assessment will be graded using a rubric. Literature and Springboard Activities (100 points): Graded discussions and mini-projects related to novels and graded assignments from Springboard (homework). There will be approximately two mini-projects per marking period and about ten Springboard assignments per marking period.Classroom & Attendance Expectations:Students should be on time to class. There will be a detention issued after the third late to class. Each additional late after the third will also result in a detention.Students should bring all materials to class on a daily basis. If you do not have an essential item like a pen/pencil, do not ask the teacher. Any cell phone activity will result in immediate confiscation and a detention.A high standard of behavior is required for this course. Respect is the fundamental value for students, teachers, and property.All school rules will be enforced; the rules listed in the student handbook apply to the classroom.All assignments must be completed by the beginning of class.
