- Hiragana is the alphabet used to write Japanese words

- Kanji is the Japanese alphabet borrowed from China hundreds of years ago

Counting

Have a look at the diagram below to see how the Japanese count from

1-10 on their fingers. Have a go at it. See how fast you can do it!

Counting over 10 is easy in Japanese. It goes like this:

11 = 10 + 1 or juu-ichi or 十一

12 = 10 + 2 or juu-ni or 十二 etc

20 = 2 x 10 or ni-juu or 二 十

21 = 2 x 10 + 1 or ni-juu-ichi or 二 十一

Now write these numbers in Japanese:

30 = 3 x 10 + 1 or ______________________________________

40 =_________________________________________________

63=__________________________________________________

Writing Kanji Numbers

Practise writing Japanese numbers in Kanji. Trace over the large one following the stroke order then write them again in the squares below.

Ages

Japanese use the ending –sai after numbers to say their age.

To ask someone’s age you say:

Nansai desu ka (How old are you?)
