The Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP)

The Secondary Level English Proficiency (SLEP)

The SLEP test is used for elementary or intermediate ESL students who understand some English. It is used with ESL students for which COMPASS is too hard.

The SLEP test is given Monday through Thursday in the Testing Center. The Center is located on Highline's Campus, Building 3, Room 101. The SLEP test is not given on Fridays or school holidays. The SLEP test takes 90 minutes. Come early. The SLEP test is free. Call 206-878-3710, extension 3251 to sign up for a testing time or if you want more information.

One student per testing hour only. Current SLEP Testing times for Summer and Fall Quarters are:

Monday 8:00am or 10:00am

Tuesday 2:00pm or 4:00pm

Wednesday 11:00am

Thursday 11:00am or 5:00pm

Advanced ESL students who want to take college level courses need to take the COMPASS test. ESL students who score 55 or more on SLEP also need to take the COMPASS test to find out if they are ready for college level courses.

The SLEP test measures understanding spoken and written English. These two scores are added together and become the "scaled total score." The scaled total score is used to help place students in ESL classes. See the chart below.

Placement scores are a rough guide. See an advisor or ESL teacher for more help in choosing your classes.
