In-Class Activities:

• We will receive and discuss a loose definition of poetry and our first vocabulary terms: stanza and meter. 5 m.

• Oral Recitation of “Sleight of Hand” by Eddie Vedder (Period 4). 5 m.

• Music Video of “Different Names for the Same Thing” performed by Death Cab for Cutie, directed by Autumn de Wilde (Period 4). 5-15 m.

• We will read our chosen song lyrics aloud as poetry noting the author (Period 6), to be continued tomorrow. 5-25 m.

• We will be given two new vocabulary terms: rhyme and rhythm (Period 6). 5-10 m.

• We will prepare a three paragraph defense of our song lyrics and why they should be considered poetry for homework (Period 6). 10-15 m.

Assessment: Informal assessment based on class participation.

• We will read aloud the poems “‘Hope’ is a Thing With Feathers” by Emily Dickinson, Jaques monologue “The Seven Ages of Men” from William Shakespeare’s play As You Like It, and “Boy at the Window” by Richard Wilbur, on pages 435, 444, and 450, respectively, in our Elements of Literature textbook. 10-15 m.

• We will write a second poem focusing on imagery and descriptive language using at least three examples of metaphor, personification, and simile for homework. 10-20 m.
