Preliminary Research

1. You will be working in stations and assigned a different station for each class in the library.

2. Each station will have a different resource that you must use for your research paper.

3. You will be responsible to compile and complete all jot notes on the assigned reading at that station.

4. Marks will be given for the quality of jot notes and time on task.

Topic: The importance of remembering significant historical events

• Identify and research three significant world events that have had an historical impact.

• You will research each of the following topics below; explain the historical significance of the event, what society has learned from the event and why it is important for it to be remembered.

Topic # 1: WAR and CONFLICT

• Subtopics: World War II, The Holocaust, Pearl Harbour

Topic # 2: EQUALITY

• Subtopics: Civil Rights Movement, women rights, gay rights, rights of the disabled

Topic # 3: TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES

• Subtopics: Industrial Revolution, medical technology, social media, and internet.

Thesis Statement: Your thesis statement should argue that it is important to remember significant events in history. You can write your own or use the thesis statement below.

Research within your Paper

In text Citations look like this:

“ direct quote” ( Saunders 89 ). - This type of citation is at the end of a quote.

Or

Saunders (2006) states “insert direct quote here” ( 89 ).

Or

In the article “Television is corrupting Society”, Saunders (2006) shows how violence on television has to potential to impact young people when he writes, “insert quote here” ( 89 ).

There are two major types of jot notes:

1. Paraphrase/Summary of Key Points

• information is written in your own words – do not copy direct sentences and/or phrases - use synonyms and your own wording

2. Direct Quote

• Use quotation marks to show that the information is taken directly from the source.

Instructions:

1. Scan and read sources and look for information to coincide with your outline.

2. Underline or highlight important facts, ideas and information.

3. This highlighted information should support ideas in your outline.

4. Take as many ideas from a source as you feel necessary to support your outline. For example, after reading ONE source, you could have several jot notes while you might gather only a couple ideas from another source.

Bibliography / References

✓ ALL sources used in research papers must be referenced in a Bibliography using the MLA documentation style [see attached]

✓ Keep a record of sources by writing all the bibliographical information on the top of your jot note sheets.

Writing your Essay:

1. Body paragraphs will be paraphrased material from your jot notes: this means you summarize (in your own words) jot notes made from your research.

2. Use of Direct References:

• Each body paragraph must include at least ONE direct quote/reference to support what you say.

• ONE of these three must be a block style quotation

o Block style quotation:

o see page 333 for “embedded” quotations and review the example in the Sample essay

(pp. 98 – 99 of Reference Points ).

Final Product Requirements:

You final Copy must be:

• Typed in size 12, Times New Roman or Arial

Introduction

• must be an overview of information you will use to prove your thesis

• see essay format

Body paragraphs:

• topic sentence -- to introduce the main idea for this paragraph

• introduce example (s) – use transition

• explain examples

• use direct reference/quote

o use MLA citations – see Sample Essay p. 97 – 102 Reference Points

• explain the direct reference/quote

• write a concluding sentence for the paragraph

Conclusion:

• summarize key points

• refer to thesis

• make a personal comment/observation but avoid “I” – use third person
