Supply List:

▪ 3-ring binder with section tab dividers, loose leaf paper, blue/black pen, and pencils

What to Expect:

▪ The district textbook, novels, and other sources, including online and hardcopy sources will be used to help us answer the following questions:

1. How can I get more out of what I read and communicate better through what I write?

2. What makes an effective argument?

3. What makes a writer unique and effective?

4. How do effective writers make all the puzzle pieces work together?

5. How can I best represent myself on the AP test/SAT/ACT and in essays for

college applications and scholarships?

6. The AP Language and Composition test will be Wednesday, May 16.

▪ Your student will have discussions, assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests to help him/her gain an understanding of the reading and writing strategies and information we will explore this year. Many opportunities to demonstrate understanding will be available. All assignments and projects are expected on the given due date! Late work will only be accepted one day late. Late work will be docked 10% (i.e. If the student would have earned an 89%, the score would be lowered to 79% when the work is submitted a day late). Homework will occasionally be assigned, but generally, wise use of classroom work time will decrease the amount of work to take home. Quarterly Books Clubs will require outside-of-class reading.

▪ Plagiarism and/or cheating will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic “0” on the assignment.

▪ Attendance is required. •Should an absence occur, a parent note is REQUIRED by the office as per the DHS handbook. •Students will have 1 day for every excused absence to make up missed assignments and tests or else a “0” will be earned unless other prior arrangements are made with me. •Students are responsible for checking with me for missed assignments before school, during break, or during lunch. •Assignments for pre-arranged absences are to be completed in advance, so that assignments may be handed in and corrected along with the others.

▪ You are your student’s first and most important teacher. Your interest in your student’s learning is greatly appreciated! Please start the year by providing guidance in getting a study routine established early and by encouraging healthy sleep and diet habits. We want to help your student to feel successful and capable, not overwhelmed and disorganized.

▪ SparkNotes and other online reading resources are a supplement NOT a replacement for class assignments.

▪ We will be using technology in our learning activities. Please complete a computer use form ASAP. Thanks!

It’s a Team Effort!
