2. from Santa Rosa.

3. After the long train ride

4. on the Santa Fe,

5. the physical exam,

6. the delousing with DDT,

7. the branding of her indignation,

8. she falls asleep.

9. Days later, she awakens

10. in an unfamiliar barracks-

11. Crystal City, Texas-

12. on land once a pasture

13. Not wanting to, not meaning to see beauty

14. in this stark landscape,

15. she sees, nonetheless,

16. though her tears-

17. on the double row of barbed wire fencing

18. which holds them in

19. like stolid cattle-

20. dewdrops, impaled

21. and golden.
