The conquest of Britain by the Normans in 1066 resulted in the country being ruled by Norman kings who spoke French. Following this, French became the language of power and authority in the country. It is thought that about 10,000 French words came into the English language at this time. Many of these words are to do with administration and the law. A few of them are listed below:
