Digital Forsyth

Lesson Plan Overview

Lesson Title: Photo Analysis for Visual Impact

Lesson Activity Author: Judy Uhrig

School: Elementary Magnet School of Visual and Performing Arts

Intended Grade Level: 4

Main Content Area: Visual Arts

Type of Activity: Design/ Hand tinting photographs

Instructional Goal:

The learner will be able to navigate through the DigitalForsyth website and locate a particular category of photographs. Then they will be able to analyze the photos and point out the similarities and differences in the way gas stations were decorated between these old photos and gas stations of today. They will be able to apply their ideas to design a Gas Station that they feel will attract customers. They will do this by selecting a photo of a gas station, printing it out on 8x10 think stock paper, and hand tinting the photographs with either colored pencils or watercolor pencils.

Alignment to the NCSCS:

Visual Arts Education (2001)--Grade 4

• Goal 2: The learner will develop skills necessary for understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes.

o Objective 2.02 Use additional art media, techniques and processes which may include:

o Objective 2.03 Increase skills with familiar materials.

• Goal 5: The learner will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.

o Objective 5.01: Recognize that art can serve more than one purpose and/or function in a given culture.

o Objective 5.02: Make responses that are both knowledge-based and personal (objective and subjective).

o Objective 5.03: Compare works of art from different times and cultures.

• Goal 7: The learner will perceive connections between visual arts and other disciplines.

o Objective 7.02: Identify how technology affects how things look and how they are done.

Materials/Resources Needed:

• Data Projector

• Computer with internet access

• Black and white printer

• Photo program or Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 to add sepia tone to photo before printing (only if you have a color printer)

• Thick stock paper (must be a matte finish)

• Colored Pencils or watercolor pencils

Activity steps and timeline:

Introduce the Digital Forsyth website to the class. Familiarize them with the search box and photo thumbnails. Point out the number of results your search produced. Then demonstrate how to click on a thumbnail to enlarge the photo and scroll down to show the photo details. Enter “gas stations” in the search box. Bring up a few examples. Have them guess what decade it might be based on the people or cars that might be in the photo. Explain to them that building and car designs are both forms of visual art.

Then pull up a few examples of photographs that have been hand-tinted. Explain to them that this was a technique that was used to color photographs before we had color photography. (10 minutes)

Have students independently pull up the site and search as demonstrated.

Then they can choose a photo and print onto 8x10 thick stock paper. Generally it is better to “sepia tone” the photo first because it increases contrast and warms up the tones. Some photo programs have this feature. The photo below was sepia toned using PowerPoint 2007. (15 minutes)

Provide color pencils or watercolor pencils for them to tint pictures. (20 minutes)

Reflection/closure:

Have students share their photos and tell why they picked the photo they did and why they colored their pictures the way they did. Did they use pastel colors or vivid ones? (5 minutes)

Assessments:

Students should have successfully located a photo of a gas station from the specified database. They should have printed it in 8x10 format and hand colored the photo using examples they were given. Work should be subtle and neat. They should be able to answer the following questions:

How have the gas stations been decorated to attract customers?

How have the way they have been designed changed over the years?

Do you think gas stations are less “artsy” today?
