APPENDIX

Online Figure 1. Representative four chamber and short axis cine-MR images of control subject and MR patient. These images demonstrate the spherical remodeling in the MR patient especially at the apex along with the decrease in LV wall thickness compared to a normal control. There is well preserved shortening in the MR patient along with evidence of turbulence and an enlarged left atrium in the LV end-systolic image of the MR patient.

Online Figure 2. Treatment effects on heart rate and systolic blood pressure over two years of follow-up. (1) Gray lines are raw data of individual patients; (2) maroon curves are raw data from patients who had surgery where solid and broken maroon lines are data before and after surgery, respectively; (3) blue shading represent individual 95% confidence intervals for the mean; and (4) solid black line represents the estimate of the mean over time. There is a treatment effect for heart rate (p=0.006) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) (p=0.03) in placebo vs. Toprol treated MR patients.
