Opportunities for Spring and Summer Enrichment Experiences!

Leadership

NC Student Government Leadership Congress, April 13-14, UNCG

o Provide a forum for high school students that will assist their understanding of student leadership strategies and advance character development.

o Two full days of workshops and an evening banquet with dance.

o $25.00 before March 16 (student/chaperone), $35.00 after that date. Price includes 8 classes, 2 lunches, Saturday night banquet ticket.

NC Youth Legislative Asembly, March 23-25, Clarion Hotel, Raleigh, NC

o Mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, national, and state government.

o Registration deadline is February 23, 2012. MAILED ONLY.

March of Dimes North Carolina Youth Council

o Youth Council member support the March of Dimes staff with the development and implementation of youth fundraising and mission awareness and education activities.

o Students should have demonstrated leadership skills, be in good academic standing, be willing to attend meetings, conferences, and work with local chapter outside of school hours.

o Please see Mrs. Planté in Guidance for an application. Application deadline is May 1st.

The Shelton Challenge, NC State Leadership Camps

o One-week summer experience for high school students focusing on leadership roles and accountability, team building, leadership styles and situations, social responsibility, integrity, and more.

o Any grade level, minimum 3.0 GPA

o Cost: $575.00 (deposit, lodging, meals and the program curriculum)

NC Community Development Initiative Summer Youth Leadership Program, June 18-Aug. 10

o Eight week paid internship with a community economic development organization.

o Rising seniors interested in leadership and community economic development.

o $3000 paid stipend to interns; Application deadline April 16, 2012

Business Opportunities

2012 Martha Guy Summer Institute for Business Leaders, July 8-28, 2012, Appalachian State

o Current high school juniors with a sincere interest in Business as a major in college.

o Program combines residential experience with travel to Washington, DC and New York City.

o 24 NC students are selected

o Tuition is $1,000; need-based scholarships available

Math and Science Opportunites

Research Apprenticeship Program for High School Students, North Carolina A&T State University

o Four-week, residential program for current juniors or seniors with an interest in majoring in food, agricultural, environmental, family and consumer sciences, and a minimum 2.5 GPA and rank in the top 25th percentile of class. Must be a US citizen.

o Gain experience in research conducted under the direction of SAES scientists; projects could include landscape architecture and pesticide studies, biotechnology, horticulture and anumal sciences to air quality, food and nutrition.

o No cost to the student for room, board, health and accident insurance and activity fees.

o Students will receive a $250.00 per week stipend.

Forensic Anthropology Summer Residential Camps, Appalachian State, July 11-14, 2012

o Hands on experience in forensic analysis of the human skeleton.

o Tuition: $459 by 3/31; after $584

Sewanee Environmental Institute’s Pre-College Field Studies Experience, June 24-July 7, 2012

o Participants spend two weeks exploring the ecosystems of the Cumberland Plateau.

Volunteer Opportunities

Wake Forest Volunteen, 2 days per week, June 25-August 11 , 2012

o Students 14-18 are eligible to apply for the program which enables them to see the inner workings of a major medical center while also learning the value of service to the community.

o 120 hours of service each summer; 2 full days per week.

Novant Health Summer Volunteer Program, June 18 – August 11, 2012

o Volunteers will work in the hospital for a minimum of six hours a week, with patients and their families.

10th Annual Service Academy Day, Saturday, March 31, 10:00 AM, Charlotte Catholic HS

o Presentations from all 5 Federal Service Academies

o Speak individually with Congressional Staff, Cadets, Midshipmen, and Academy representatives

o Open to students interested in attending a Service Academy

United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar

o Week-long, residential experience for rising seniors.
