Wireless Authentication with 802.1x using 802.1i encryption with EAP-PEAP authentication.Under Windows XP Service Pack 3To login to the Gateway Technical College Secure-Wireless Network when you arrive on campus, you first need to know your Windows Domain account. If you are not sure what it is, it is the first part of your email address before the @. IE: smithj@gtc.edu would be smithj.These instructions should work with any 802.1x / 802.1i compatible wireless card running Windows XP with Service Pack 3.?Go to the control panel and double click Network Connections.You will see the following screen.If a wireless card is properly installed, you will see the Wireless Network Connection icon. If not, the wireless adapter is not being properly detected and you should re-install the adapter and driver. Right click the Wireless Network Connection icon and select properties. On the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, select the Wireless Networks tab.Make sure the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings is checked. Click the Add.. button in the Preferred networks section. You should now see the Wireless network properties window.In the Network_name (SSID) field, enter GTC-Staff exactly as shown here. In the Network Authentication drop down menu, make sure that WPA2 is selected. In the Data encryption drop down menu, make sure that AES is selected. Select the Authentication tab.Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network should be checked. In the EAP type drop down menu, select Protected EAP (PEAP) Authenticate as computer when computer information is available should NOT be checked. Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable should NOT be checked. Click the Properties button on the middle right hand side of the window. 6.Protected EAP PropertiesValidate server certificate should NOT be checked. In the Select Authentication Method drop down menu, select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2). Enable Fast Reconnect should NOT be checked. Click the Configure button in lower right corner. EAP MSCHAPv2 PropertiesAutomatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) should NOT be checked. Click ok to all the open windows, and close the Network Connections window and the Control Panel. Wireless Network ConnectionIf you are on the GTC campus, you will now see the Wireless Network Connection bubble display in your system tray. Click in the bubble. Enter your GTC credentials in Enter Credentials window.Enter your GTC account User name. Enter your GTC account Password. You can leave the Logon domain field blank. Click OK. More Information on Windows Supplicant:Login information connecting for the client is automatically stored by the supplicant on the local drive If you successfully connect to the network, Windows XP will try to reconnect you to the secure network via the stored credentials every time you reboot. Friends or colleagues will be able to log on to the wireless network as if they are you when using your laptop.This login encrypts your data being sent over the wireless network. This will NOT give you access to any network resource. You must issue login requests for the services you request.If you cannot browse any web pages after connecting to the secure wireless network, but the wireless network icon indicates that it is connected and the signal strength is good, make sure that your machine is getting a proper IP address To get your IP address, you can do the following: Double click the wireless network icon in your system tray (i.e. right bottom corner of the screen) Click on the Support tab This will show you your IP address Make sure that the address starts with 010.xxx.xxx.xxx If it doesn't start with 010.xxx.xxx.xxx, then something is wrong with the configuration and you are not connected to the secure-wireless network SSID Information:To view the available wireless networks, right click on the wireless network icon in the task tray, and select View available wireless networks.You can select any of the available wireless networks.
