May 2006

Dear Partner:

Camden City is rich in community and faith-based services designed to help residents build their educational and occupational skills, and to obtain employment. There are programs for adults and youth, many of which provide an array of comprehensive programs and services. However, these programs can’t help if people can’t find them; and people can’t make good choices if they don’t know their options.

Recognizing the need to connect City residents to the resources available in their community, Camden City Initiatives, a committee of the Camden County Workforce Investment Board, has developed this directory. This directory provides key information on many local organizations that can deliver the necessary supports to achieve educational and career success, including:

• Occupational Skills Training

• Literacy services, including GED prep and English as a Second Language

• Computer literacy training

• Study skills development and support in doing homework

• Case management and career counseling support

• Services to address issues such as homelessness, substance abuse and domestic violence

In introducing this directory, we are also pleased to highlight the two new Workforce Literacy Labs recently opened in the City, located in the Cramer Hill and North Camden Community Centers. Through these locations, as well as through the One-Stop Career Center at 2600 Mt. Ephraim Avenue, Camden City residents can access literacy services and receive assistance in developing a career plan and conducting a job search right in their own communities.

This Jobs Resource Directory is the result of months of hard work by the private and public sector members of Camden City Initiatives, and we thank them for their support. We also thank UOSS-211.

If your organization is not listed in the directory, please complete the Workforce Services Provider Fact Sheet and fax it to the WIB for inclusion in the directory on our website.

The Camden County Workforce Investment Board, its One-Stop Career Centers and Camden City Initiatives Committee are proud to provide this directory to the City of Camden. We hope you’ll find it useful for working with your customers and that its resources will lead to career and educational success.

Sincerely,

John J. Gallagher, Jr. Linda Winfield

The agency matches youth in need of positive guidance with a professionally screened adult volunteer. In the traditional community- based program, volunteers see their “Little Brother/Sister” on a consistent basis doing activities of their choice. In the new school based program, a volunteer visits their “Little Brother/Sister” at their school for about an hour a week. The school- based program may fit well with the schedules of retirees, college students, and corporate volunteers. There is also a group mentoring program, known as the Kids Club, that is good for one time volunteers and groups.
