Job Summary

Develop, direct and manage corporate-wide environmental programs, initiatives, policies and procedures designed to achieve and maintain compliance with applicable federal, state and local environmental regulatory requirements. Support the company's construction projects and is also responsible for obtaining environmental permits for those projects. Create innovative environmental policies that will ensure environmental compliance, manage risk, and achieve the company’s business goals and objectives.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

• Interpret existing and pending federal, state and local regulations to assess business impacts.

• Prepare environmental goals, policies, procedures, or other business strategies designed to achieve compliance objectives. Partner with other internal corporate team members as needed to execute corporate approved plans.

• Provide strategic leadership and vision for the companies’ environmental program. Manage environmental risk, avoid incidents, and monitor environmental compliance for all business activities.

• Prepare environmental permits or operating plans related to hazardous wastes, hazardous materials, air emissions control, wastewater, storm water discharge, and petroleum storage.

• Complete due diligence property evaluations and manage site remedial actions if needed (i.e. soil or groundwater cleanup). Manage related documentation.

• Manage long-term environmental strategic guidance and planning for new and existing construction projects.

• Develop or promote corporate resource conservation, recycling, pollution prevention, and sustainable operations.

• Provide technical oversight of operational compliance and site remediation projects to ensure work products meet expectations and offer cost-effective business solutions.

• Manage outside environmental consultant projects and work products as needed.

• Review and approve technical guidance for environmental due diligence surveys (Phase I / II evaluations) to achieve consistency in property environmental risk evaluations and manage related documentation.

• Provide technical expertise to corporate legal team (e.g., environmental provisions of pending legal documents) as needed.

• Monitor and environmental program related costs.

• Coordinate with local, state, and federal environmental regulators and agencies. Implement and communicate revisions to plans and procedures with all appropriate personnel.

• Ensure compliance with unique environmental requirements.

• Manage due diligence documents.

• Identify major risks and potential problems, take necessary actions to avoid incidents, and prevent reoccurrences.

• Work with senior management to communicate environmental strategies, and provide reports.

• Perform other duties as needed.

Requirements

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in geology, biology, environmental engineering or a related field from an accredited university OR equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience in addition to experience listed below.

Experience:

• At least 10 years of applicable environmental management experience, preferably in a corporate retail setting.

• Demonstrating a thorough understanding and working knowledge of applicable federal and state environmental regulations (i.e. CERCLA (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act), RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act), CWA (Clean Water Act), CAA (Clean Air Act); PPA (Pollution Prevention Act), and OSHA’s PSM program (Occupational Safety and Health Administration; Process Safety Management).

• Working effectively with and through others to achieve best practices and solve business problems in timely and cost effective ways.

• Demonstrating strong leadership, organizational and supervisory skills.

• Exhibiting expert budget management, prioritization and delegation abilities.

• Utilizing good trouble-shooting skills.

• Prioritizing and performing a variety of simultaneous tasks (multi-tasking).

• Demonstrating initiative, self-direction and effectively managing time to ensure that deadlines are met.

• Prioritizing and executing tasks in a high-pressure environment.

• Demonstrating excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).

• Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with functional areas across the organization and with outside agencies.

• Demonstrating adaptability and flexibility when confronted with challenging situations or obstacles; comfortable with change and ambiguity; practicing constructive criticism and dealing well with difficult co-workers and supervisors.

• Demonstrating effective oral and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of internal and external team members and customers.

• Respond to calls on urgent matters involving environmental compliance including after business hours, on weekends and holidays.

• Travel regularly to various project sites and employee locations on an as needed basis, up to 15%.

• Bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently.

• Occasionally crawl, climb ladders, and work in environments with varied extreme temperatures.

• Perform all tasks efficiently and accurately with confidentiality, honesty and integrity.

• Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

Machines Operated:

• Computer, keyboard, mouse, office equipment (telephone, fax, etc.) and other devices.

Additional Requirements:

• Acceptable Department of Motor Vehicles driving record.

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Credentials:

• Graduate degree in geology, biology, environmental engineering or a related field from an accredited university.
