The publishing industry has embraced EPUB 3:80% of new higher education textbooks are in EPUB 3Older publications are slowly moving to EPUBBig publishers have a “digital first” approach to publishing and EPUB comes directly out of XML content repositories – printers directly controlled by XML repositories (sometimes no PDF is created!)Tech Sector, publishers, and the disability community joined to evolve standards Publishers want a single file they can distribute everywhere Tech companies want content they can display on any device The disability community want different things:People who are blind want to use their screen readersPeople with low vision want to enlarge the characters and adjust visualsPeople with learning differences want to choose colors, font, spacing and have highlighting while hearing it read to themEPUB 3 is maintained and improved in the W3C publishing groups by publishers, universities and experts and EPUB 3 files are built using the same technologies that build the web (greater opportunity for accessibility):HTML 5CSSJavaScriptDemo Video – Reading an EPUBReading in EPUB (open captions, 59MB) Video demonstrates the following:Using a table of contents and real page navigationUsing a screen reader with EPUB publicationHow EPUB reflows when fonts are increasedUsing read aloud with synchronized highlighting to help with learner comprehensionHigh Quality EPUB PublicationsA high-quality EPUB publication: Conforms to EPUB 3 at the WCAG Double AA level Includes alt text on images Has extended descriptions for complex imagesIncludes page navigation when a print version also existsHa accessibility metadata that is disclosed and transparentIs certified as accessible by a third partyThe EPUB Accessibility and Discovery Specification was approved on January 2017 and establishes a baseline for accessibility. It references WCAG levels A and AA with some EPUB-specific requirements. It requires that metadata that can be used for discovery be present and it allows publishers to make conformance claims. The specification has been praised by the publishing industry for setting the bar for EPUB accessibility. VitalSource exposes accessibility metadata, including an accessibility summary. The accessibility of an EPUB publication can be checked with the free Ace by DAISY Accessibility Checker:Free open source softwareWorks for all versions of EPUBAutomatically checks the whole title and reports errorsGenerates visualizations for manual reviewProvides in HTML report for easy viewingGlobal Certified Accessible is the first-ever certification initiative for EPUB. It is a global initiative driven by Benetech (using Ace by DAISY and SMART) and it informs users, librarians and procurement offices that a publication is accessible (kknow before you buy or borrow).Educator Produced ContentLearners need access to accessible documents and instructors can also create EPUBs using common word processorsGoogle Docs (built-in)Pages (built-in)MS Word (with plugin under development)Steps for creating an EPUB with Google Docs:Make sure document follows accessibility best practices.Check accessibility using the free Grackle Docs add-on.Export to EPUB by choosing File, Download As, EPUB.
