Before you begin, clear the memory on your calculator by pressing 2nd, +, 7, 1, 2

Turn on the Diagnostic by pressing 2nd, 0, X-1, arrow down to DiagnosticOn and press ENTER, ENTER, CLEAR

Given a Table and No Equation

Step 1: Press STAT, 1

List the x-values in L1 and the y-values in L2

(Note: each time you enter your table into L1 and L2 after the first time, you will have to clear the data that is already there. Arrow up to highlight L1 or L2 and press CLEAR, ENTER)

Step 2: Press Y=

Clear any equation in Y1

Arrow up once to highlight Plot 1

Press ENTER to turn on Plot 1

Step 3: Press STAT

Arrow right to move to CALC

Select choice 4 for Linear, 5 for Quadratic, or 0 for Exponential

Press ENTER

Step 4: Record your equation for the line or curve of best fit and the correlation coefficient or r value

Step 5: Press Y= and enter your equation in Y1

Step 6: Press ZOOM 9 to view your Stat Plot and line or curve of best fit

Step 7: Press 2nd MODE to return to the main screen

Press VARS, arrow right to Y-VARS

Press 1, 1 and open the parenthesis

Type the independent value (x) you are using to predict the outcome

Press ENTER

Record your prediction

Congratulations!

Now let’s try some….

Example 1: The table below shows the year and population (in millions) of Texas. Sketch the scatterplot, determine the appropriate regression to use (quadratic, exponential, or linear), and find the equation of the regression line.

Regression Type:

Example 2: The table below shows the balance of Marissa’s bank account at the end of each year. Sketch the scatterplot, determine the appropriate regression to use (quadratic, exponential, or linear), and find the equation of the regression line.

Regression Type:
