Equation of a line and Systems Project

Equation of a line and Systems Project

Algebra II Pre-AP

Objective:

To find various equations of lines using points on a drawing and then to find the relative domain and range of each line and the point of intersection of chosen lines

Activity:

1. On graph paper, draw a picture of your choice which contains at least 12 straight lines and 8 intersections amongst those lines based on the following requirements:

a. There must be 1 horizontal and 1 vertical line (you may use no more for credit)

b. There must be at least 6 lines that have non-integer y-intercepts.

c. There must be more than 8 slopes represented.

d. There must be at least 5 intersections that fall on non-integer coordinates.

e. Coordinates that you use to find the equations of your lines may not fall on an intersection.

f. You may use the vertical and horizontal line in at most 1 intersection (for credit).

Make sure that you clearly mark the lines you have chosen to use on your graph.

2. In the first attached table, write two integer coordinates that fall on each line. Write the specified forms of the equation for the line passing through those coordinates. Then, find the domain and range of each of the chosen segments on your picture. Write the domain in interval notation and the range in set notation in the specified columns.

3. In the second attached table, write the equations that correspond to the lines that intersect from the first table and then write their point of intersection in the designated areas.

4. Your picture will be the cover page followed by the tables of your results and then your work. All work for each problem should be attached. The table and work must be legible and neatly organized. Work for each problem should be in numerical order and labeled. The last page in your packet should be the rubric.

5. The project will be graded based upon accuracy and all work that the student shows.

6. Students may find up to 14 lines and 11 intersections. The extra lines and intersections will be extra credit.

7. Once you finish filling out these documents, fill out the excel document posted to the website. Email the completed document to your teacher:

NSmith8@, JRamon1@, or chen.cvhs.math@

This project will be graded using the rubric seen below. It will be due on Sept 26th. Turning it in late forfeits the right to have extra credit and lowers your grade by 10% for each day it is late. The emailed excel document must be received by 8:00 AM the morning of Friday, September 26, or the project will be considered late. Additionally, the paper documents must be in my hand by 3:45 on Friday, September 26, or the project will be considered late.
