Ordering the Events of the 4 Eras
Ordering the Events of the 4 Eras
Procedure:
1) Sketch the bell shape graph of the Universes’ expansion over time on a full sheet of paper.
2) Label the approximate location of each of the 4 Eras.
3) Cut out Events (I. – IX.) below and place them in the chronologic order on the bell shaped graph of the universe’s expansion over time.
Events
I. Atoms form
II. Quarks come together to form protons & neutrons
III. Universe rapidly expands and flattens
IV. Production of particle/antiparticle pairs stops
V. Surface of last scattering also known as the CMB
VI. Slight variations in energy density occur
VII. Protons & Neutrons come together forming nuclei
VIII. Quark-gluon plasma soup
IX. Stars & galaxies form
4) Now cut out the causes (a.-i.) and place them next to the matching events.
Causes
a. Free energy decreases due to a decrease in temperature
b. Gravitational attraction of both visible & dark matter
c. Light & matter stop continuously interacting
d. Inflation
e. Quantum Fluctuations
f. Electromagnetic force can now hold protons & neutrons together
g. Universe is still hot enough that the strong force can’t hold quarks together
h. It has cooled enough that gluons can now hold protons & neutrons together
i. For reasons unknown there is an excess of matter
5) Answer the following questions:
Questions:
1. Which two events really occurred at the same time?
2. During which Eras is the Universe expanding?
3. When the universe expands what happens to the temperature?
4. During which Eras is the expansion rate accelerating (increasing)?
5. In your own words describe what happened in each Era, starting with Era 1.
