Exploring Your Identity

Psy 202 Exploring Your Identity 10 pts. Due 4/5

Information regarding identity and identity status is found in Ch 10.

Think about your identity in many domains(areas, categories) of your life. What is your identity status (James Marcia theory) in these different areas—diffused, foreclosed, moratorium, or achieved? If it is diffused or foreclosed, take some time to think about what you need to do to move into a moratorium or achieved status in those areas.

Use the chart below to explore your identity status in each of the domains or areas mentioned. Consider your status, explain how you determined you are in that status. Then state how you might move to moratorium or achieved status if you are not there.

Reflect on your own life course. Fill in each area with information that corresponds with your life now. Some areas may be better suited for you than others, do the best you can. Feel free to use the chart or not, but reflect on your life using the areas included. Be sure to answer the questions at end of this chart.

1. As you look over the chart, are you in different statuses for different areas of your life? What does this tell you about yourself? What does it tell you about how Erikson’s and Marcia’s theories fit into adolescent development?

2. These theorists suggest that you work on moving to moratorium of identity achieved status. Do you believe this is appropriate for you? Why not? Is there some reason why it may be more appropriate for you to be in any particular status at this point in your life? Give in-depth explanations as to your reasons.
