MERRY-GO-ROUND

Observe the text: can you deduce the nature? This is a poem.

Read the text and pick out the word starting with a capital letter. Jim Crow, South. Jim Crow is a person and South is a place.

Where have you already seen the noun Jim Crow? In the chronology, in 1896, this is a law which claims that segregation is constitutional so lawful.

Read the poem and pick out the information you have on the narrator. The narrator is a child “kid” and also because he wants to ride a merry-go-round, he is black.

Read the text again and say what sort of sentences you see? There are two interrogative sentences, and one exclamative. What does the narrator want to know? He wants to find the Jim Crow section.

Pick out the examples of Jim Crow sections in the poem. It's the separation of white people and colored people. In the train there is a special car for them. In the bus they have to sit in the back.

What is the situation in the poem? The narrator wants to find the same sort of place but on a merry-go-round.

Now, you have five minutes to try to write a definition of what is the Jim Crow law. The Jim Crow law established the Jim Crow section that is to say the separation of black and white people. In the train there is a special car for black people, and in the bus they have to sit in the back (as in the story of Rosa Parks).

BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION

Take a look at the picture, where and when does the scene take place? It takes place in 1954 in front of the Supreme Court which looks like a temple.

Who are the people on the picture? What are they doing? The people are two black persons, certainly a mother with her daughter. They are probably happy because there is no more segregation at school “celebrate”.

How is called the event that took place? Brown v. Board of education. Why does it mark a turning point in the USA history? It marks a turning point as it is a new victory for black people. They managed to be considered as equal with the white people.

SUM UP THE INFORMATION AND WRITE THEM ON THE BOARD. Ecrire au tableau mais ne pas recopier car éléments à ajouter avant.

Read the text and find the three words that are missing. White / Black / School.

Use your own words to sum up what led to the case. This is the case of a little girl named Linda Brown who lived in Topeka and whose parents wanted her to go to the nearest school which happened to be a school for white people. But she was rejected. Her father decided to sue the school and the case was appealed in front of the Supreme Court which claimed that rejecting the little girl was against the 14th Amendment.
