Alternating Teacher Model: An IET model where students study in an ESL or ABE class first and then when that class is over, students study technical skills classes with a technical skills instructor. Ideally this happens on the same day.2. Basic Skills: Skills taught in adult education programs to help adult learners obtain a GED credential or enroll in postsecondary education. These include English language skills, math, reading and writing.3. Career Pathways: Career pathways have been described as a series of connected education and training programs and support services that allow students to secure employment within a specific occupational field. Each step on a career pathway is designed to prepare the participant for the next level of employment and education.4. Cluster VESL: An IET model where all students are together for general workplace instruction for the first part of the class and in the second part of the class, students work independently or in groups for career specific instruction.5. Contextualized Instruction: Instruction that connects in meaningful ways to students’ daily lives and interests. This can be done by incorporating into the instruction materials students use in their lives outside of the classroom (bus schedules, newspapers, etc.). Or information related to specific contexts (work, family, etc.)6. I-BEST: Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training pairs ESL or ABE instructors with professional-technical instructors in the classroom to provide students with literacy or math education and workforce skills at the same time. 7. Integrated Education and Training (IET): According to the U.S. Department of Education, it combines occupational skills training with adult education services to increase the educational and career advancement of participants.8. Team Teaching: Two or more faculty working together on shared outcomes.9. VESL/VABE Specific Model: An IET model where students attend a vocation-specific VESL/VABE class. Upon completion of the class, students are ready for employment or career technical training.ResourcesLiteracy Information and Communication Skills. (2009).
