Dear Pentathlon Coach,

Welcome back to the Pentathlon! Preparations are underway for this year’s competition and this packet contains your official registration information.

The overall theme for this year’s Pentathlon competition is The 1960s. This year’s curricular theme runs parallel to the high school program. The competition is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, 2019, at East Middle School from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Administrators and families are invited to attend the Super Quiz Oral Relay which will begin at 1:30 p.m. and to stay for the awards ceremony immediately to follow the relay.

Please make sure that when you are processing payments, you take care to process for the correct organization. There are two fees required for participation in the program. (1) Payable to PAAD, Pennsylvania Academic Decathlon, a fee of $450 to cover the cost of hosting the competition, including meals. This fee must be paid along with submission of your team roster by March 23rd otherwise your team is ineligible to compete. (2) Payable to USAD, a fee of $275 to purchase the study materials and practice tests. Once this fee is paid, you will receive an email from the national pentathlon coordinator instructing you how to download your materials. Both invoices are attached to this mailing. Pay special attention when submitting payments so that the delivery of your study materials is not delayed. In addition to these fees, the school is responsible for ordering their own novels. This year’s novel is The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano by Sonia Manzano (ISBN#9978-0-545-32506-6).

If you happened to visit the USAD national website, you saw that there are Pentathlon online competitions throughout the year. Those events are for other states that do not offer a face-to-face competition. Because we use the same material as those online competitions for our state competition, you are not permitted to participate in the online events until the national championship competition. If you do participate in any of the offered online events, you are not eligible to participate in our state competition on April 6th.

Students will be tested in all five subject areas: fine arts, literature, math, science, and social science. All tests will be 30 minutes long with the exception of literature, which will be 20 minutes long to complement the 30 minute essay writing component. All tests will consist of 50 questions, except for math which will have 35 questions and literature which will have 30 questions. The essay component will focus on the literature studies. The literature score will be a combination of the literature test (possible 600 points) and the essay writing component (possible 400 points) for a possible total of 1,000 points. Please be aware that the fine arts test may include visual (art) and/or audio (music) components in conjunction with the written questions.

Super Quiz Oral Relay will continue to be a collaborative group effort with all 3 students in each division participating at the same time. The super quiz oral relay component will be a potpourri of questions from all 5 subject areas: fine arts, literature, mathematics, science, and social science. Students will be permitted to use calculators for the math questions.

When completing your team roster registration form, keep in mind that your team can only be comprised of nine students, 3 in each division, in any combination of students in grades 6, 7, and 8. All necessary forms must be submitted to me by March 22, 2019 along with your registration payment. You will receive an email closer to competition day containing any final details you need to be made aware of.

The USAD® national organization is offering to our state the opportunity for Pennsylvania’s state champion and runner up teams to participate in their National Pentathlon Competition. The national competition information will be forthcoming. This competition will utilize the same study material and format you will use for the PAAD Pentathlon competition. The national essay component will take place online April 26, 2019 with the objectives taking place at the actual competition. If either or both of the top two teams are unable to travel to the competition, an online competition will be offered.

Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions about your information packet, the forms, or any procedures.

Sincerely,

Michelle
