Listening – Eudora Welty

Listening – Eudora Welty

1. Notes:

Objective: Beginning to develop voice – as it said in the introduction, you have to listen and observe others before you know what will work for you. To develop YOUR OWN voice (in writing and in the world) you have to know what you like and what you don’t like.

Question: What is voice in writing? – it is what the author “sounds” like metaphorically and literally. Can you tell your best friend has written you a text even before you see whom it is from? Do you know how he/she speaks? That is what voice is like. I can tell authors apart

Voice is the author's style, the quality that makes his or her writing unique, and which conveys the author's attitude, personality, and character.

Sensory Images: Sensory images are images created in your head from a very detailed description of something, often using more than one of the five senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing).

3. How many times does Welty use the word “read” in the opening paragraph? What is the impact of this repetition?

4. What characteristics do we know Welty’s parents have based on the first few pages?

5. It is NOT necessary to know all of the authors and works Welty names throughout this piece. Why does she list so many if there is no way we will know them all?

6. sensory images examples

7. Write quote on the board:

“The sound of what falls on the page begins the process of testing it for truth.” What does she mean? What is she teaching us about listening?

Think back to the books you remembered reading as a child: was reading a pleasant experience? Who read to you? Did anyone tell you stories as a child that didn’t come from books? What were they about?
