This will be an exciting year at Park Middle School as we investigate science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM). You will likely find that this science class is very different from ones you have taken in the past. It will be a fun year with lots of exciting things to do and learn. Nevertheless, it will also be challenging with lots of hard work on projects, reports, computer video assignments, homework and text reading. My number one goal for you is for you to learn how to think about the world we live in, question how things work, and conduct scientific experiments and have fun in the process. Yes, of course, there will be tests and quizzes and you will have to answer some questions, but my class is designed so that you will learn by doing, seeing and hearing. I will ask you to exercise your brain, ask as many questions as you answer, and discover the power of inquiry. Remember science is the art of questioning!!!Grading policy:Grades will be broken down as follows:Classwork Homework Labs Essays 50% Tests Quizzes Projects 50%Standards & BenchmarksThis class is designed based on the California State Science Standards and Benchmarks which the textbook assists in outlining. expect 7th graders to come to class prepared to learn and to remain in class for the entire class period. Missing just 2 minutes of class every day of the school year results in a loss of 6 hours of learning time. This means you will need to use the restroom before you get to my class. However, I do understand that an emergency may arise where you need to leave class. Please sign out, before leaving the class.Food & Drink and PhonesFood, drink, candy, gum, etc. may not be consumed in the classroom. Water bottles are acceptable. Please have your cell phone put away. 1st Warning 2nd Taking 3rd Call Home-Office Visit/DetentionClassroom ManagementTo all of us here at Park, discipline means nothing more than doing what is expected and what you already know you should do. I feel that discipline is primarily a student’s responsibility. I try to teach students that they have choices to make each and every day throughout life. With each choice made, there is a result. Some choices bring pleasant results; some choices bring not so pleasant results. It is up to each student as to how he or she handles the choices that are made each day. There are six Qualities of a Successful Learner for my classroom:Listen when others are talking.Follow directions.Keep hands feet and objects to yourself.Work quietly and do not disturb others.Show respect for school and personal property.Work and play in a safe manner.FishTank-Greenhouse AreaWe will have a community fish tank. Please feel free to obtain community goldfish. Please note when you would like to bring them. Remember to open bag if getting the day before for oxygen. Check with me before obtaining.Stay FocusedMy classroom is a place to learn. I believe that every student has the right to learn in my classroom, and that I have the right to teach in my classroom. Classroom discipline involves upholding these rights for everyone in the room. I expect all children to work together in a kind, respectful environment. Classroom management includes, but is not limited to positive feedback, consequence-reflection essays and behavior grades. I have found that when given the opportunity to make the correct choice, along with the knowledge of both positive and negative consequences, 7th graders will make the correct choice more often than not. Please begin warm up when class begins. Here is a list of Student Responsibilities:Arrive to class on time and ready to work.Bring all necessary materials and assignment notebook to class.Appropriate clothing is required. No food or beverages in class except as noted by teacher. Water bottles are fine.No gum on campus.Respectful behavior to others. No unnecessary disruption of the classroom environment.DistractionsItems such as toys, cell phones, non-scientific magazines, hairbrushes, makeup, iPods or MP3 players, cameras, etc. are distractions to your learning. If I see these items while you are in the classroom, they will be taken and you will be referred to the office and a call will be placed to your parents. Writing UtensilsPlease come prepared with a pencil every day. May I suggest a #2 mechanical pencil. This avoids disruption using a pencil sharpener.Make-Up Work Due To AbsenceIf you are absent from class, you have the number of days you were absent to complete and turn in your absent work. Late WorkPark students are expected to turn in all assignments on time. If an assignment is late for any reason other than an absence, the highest grade it can get is an 80%.Seating AssignmentsRoom 407 is designed as a science lab. I will assign seats. If you have vision, hearing, or attention difficulties and need to be assigned to a front seat, please let me know on the first day of class. You do not have the right to interrupt or interfere with anyone else’s education. Classroom Textbooks-Science MaterialsPlease take care of any and all textbooks and materials. Science WebsiteYou can check my website: CleanlinessI expect all students to do their part in helping keep our classroom clean. This means that before you leave the classroom you:Put all trash in the trash cans.Push your stool under the table. End of the day all stools go up on lab table.Put away any and all books, supplies, etc. that you used during class.Clean up any mess you make.Suggested Items Mr. Zrinski’s Science Supply List 1-Non-fiction/Science book of your choice for silent reading time.2-Single subject spiral notebook; 3-Colored pencils, highlighters: I like to use 4 colors for highlighters: red=details yellow=caution vocabulary words/definitions green=big ideas blue=main ideas 4-Blue or black ballpoint pens 5-Simple calculator 6-Scissors; 7-Hole puncher 8-School planner 9-No. 2 pencils with erasers/mechanical pencils 10-Lined index cards for vocabulary flashcards11-Glue Sticks ................
