Essentials of College Writing: Semester Overview

Essentials of College Writing: Semester Overview

Quarter 1:

Review of writing and basic essay writing skills

Discussions of why we write and how writing is going to fit into your future

Portfolio Begins:

During the course of this quarter students will be writing an essay every week. The topics will coincide with the elements of rhetoric being taught in that unit. Each student will write 3 essays per unit, but, WILL ONLY SUBMIT ONE ESSAY TO BE FORMALLY ASSESSED. For every essay, the process is the main focus and grades will be calculated on skill, effort and improvement. In addition to essay writing, there will be a number of times when various forms of college writing will be practiced (annotated bibliographies, precise, etc.). You will be receiving a portfolio grade that is based upon the following criteria: effort, progress, improvement, and achievement. This is the Touchstone for this quarter.

Argument project: the quarter ends with a group teaching project. This project is a 2-day presentation in which your group will be teaching and presenting a particular form of argument to the class.

Quarter 2:

I-search essay: the entire quarter is dedicated to the research and completion of the research paper. In order to receive credit for this class EVERY step of the research paper must be completed!

NOTE TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS: This is a simple guideline that is subject to change. By no means is this an exact replica of the year, but rather an insight into the possibilities and experiences that could occur
