STUDY GUIDES BY SUBJECT

Grade 3 Quarter Two Study Guides

1/22/14

MATH:

The math test will have three sections each worth 33% of the overall points on the test. Each section will represent a chapter we have covered in second quarter. All problems on this test will be presented in a “fill-in-the-blank” format similar to that on the chapter seven test. Please note that even though we have started Chapter 8(multiplication), no material from chapter 8 will be included on the exam. Additionally, there will not be any problem on the test involving FRONT END ESTIMATION, only rounding will be used.

Below is the title of the chapter and which lessons are most important to focus on. To study, I recommend you re-read the pages listed and review the corresponding pages in the math workbook. Additionally, during our review days next week the students will be assigned a number of relevant worksheets to help them practice skills from earlier in the quarter.

1. Chapter 4

Lesson 1: Estimate Sums pages 68-69. Use rounding to estimate the sums of 2, 3 and, 4-digit numbers.

Lesson 4: Predict and Test pages 74-75. Use the predict and test method to solve problems involving unknown addends.

Lesson 5: Choose a Method page 76-79. Be able to identify when to use mental math or the paper and pencil method. IMPORTANT! You will not be allowed to use a calculator at any time during this test.

Lesson 6: Expressions and Number Sentences pages 80-81. Be able to write Expressions and Number-Sentences representing situations. Also, be able to use greater than, less than, equal to, and not equal to in making number sentences true.

2. Chapter 5

Lesson 1: Estimate Differences pages 88-89. Be able to estimate the difference between 2, 3 and 4-digit numbers.

Lesson 3: Subtract Across Zeroes pages 92-95. Be able to subtract up to 4-digit numbers with zeroes in the middle.

Lesson 6: Problem Solving Skill Estimate or Exact Answer pages 102-103. Identify whether it is better to use an estimate or an exact answer to solve a problem.

3. Chapter 7

Lesson 1: Tell Time pages 128-131. Be able to tell time to the nearest minute using various methods and formats. This lesson introduces all the rest of the chapter and is crucial to understand. Important vocabulary is presented in this chapter such as quarter hour, half hour, clockwise, and counter-clockwise.

Lesson 2: A.M and P.M. pages 132-133. Be able to write and correctly identify times as either AM or PM. If able, all times should be written with a time signature, similar to always including a dollar sign after every money problem. Understand the difference between noon and midnight.

Lesson 3, 4 + 5: Elapsed Time pages 134-141. A very important series of lessons. Be able to tell elapsed time using schedules, calendars, clocks and story problems.

Lesson 6: sequence events pages 142-143. Be able to sequence events using a time line. Also be able to look at a timeline and tell which events happened first, or last.

Language Arts

The LA Exam will have five parts, each worth 20% of the possible points on the test. Each part will represent the sections of Language Arts: Vocabulary, Comprehension, Grammar, Writing, and Spelling. The vocabulary will be structured like it is on the weekly test with two columns of matching and will feature 15 randomly selected vocabulary words. For comprehension, students will read a short story and answer a mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. Grammar will be tested using a number of “fill-in-the-blank” style questions similar to those in the workbook. Writing will be evaluated by having the students write a simple paragraph following a writing prompt and using the topic sentence-supporting sentence-concluding sentence format we have been using in class. Finally, spelling will be evaluated like our weekly spelling tests except it will feature only 15 randomly selected NON-CHALLENGE words. As we will be finishing the “Ramona Forever” story next week, no material or vocabulary from it will appear on the exam.

To prepare for this test, I recommend that you review your language arts workbook as well as the exercises we will be doing in class next week. Additionally, review the respective pages in your Language Arts Textbook which I have listed below.

Vocabulary Lists: Not every word listed here will appear on the test. About half of them will be selected at random, so make sure to study all of them!

GRAMMAR SKILLS:

Be certain to review all of the grammar skills we have covered this quarter. The following list gives the name of the focus skill as well as the workbook page which it can be found on. Additionally, review all of the pages in the workbook which correspond to these skills.

• Singular and Plural Nouns: Page 39 Know how to make a singular noun into a plural and a plural into a singular.

• Irregular Plural Nouns: Page 43 Know how to identify and write irregular nouns. No irregular noun will appear on the test that isn’t also on this page.

• Singular Possessive Nouns: Page 47 Know how to correctly use an apostrophe to indicate possession in singular nouns.

• Plural Possessive Nouns: Page 53 Know how to correctly use an apostrophe to indicate possession in plural nouns. No irregular plural nouns will be on this part of the test.

• Abbreviations: Page 59 Know how to abbreviate words.

• Singular and Plural Pronouns: Page 63 Know how to use pronouns to replace singular and plural nouns in a sentence.

.

Social Studies:

This quarter’s SS test will cover Chapter 2. Students will be given a practice test in class which will give them an idea of what they need to study as it will include the same material and format. Aside from knowing vocabulary definitions, students should be able to apply the mapping/geography skills used in their projects as well as discuss the different sizes of communities and how a community forms. In general, students should be able to easily answer the following questions:

• Name all seven continents.

• What is a hemisphere? How many hemispheres are on a globe? What hemispheres is Egypt in?

• Students should be able to easily identify the different parts of a map such as the compass rose, map key and be able to find locations using a map. (page 42-43)

• Why are Capital Cities important to a Nation? Who is the leader of a Country?

• What are the differences between a rural, urban, and suburban community?

• What is a community’s history? Why is it important? What do we call people who start a community or explore new places?

Science:

The Science quarter test will be on all of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. The vocabulary matching section will be about a third of possible points on the test so it is important to make sure you have your vocabulary definitions correctly copied into the science copybook. While not all of these terms will appear on the test it is important that students review all as they will be randomly selected from both chapters. Additionally, we will be taking a quiz on Tuesday on material we have covered in chapter 2 which can be used to help review.
