Parents/Guardians,

We are writing to you because we value the health and well-being of our students. Our first priority as a school district is to provide a safe, healthy environment for your child to learn. As you are aware, Governor Ivey declared a State of Emergency Friday afternoon and mandated all K-12 Public Schools be closed beginning Thursday, March 19th through Friday, April 3rd. However, Monday, March 16th through Wednesday, March 18th are regular school days for Attalla City Schools. Starting Monday, if you decide that keeping your child at home is best, we honor and support your decision and the absences will be excused.

We want to provide some information concerning the upcoming school closure:

Athletics and Extracurricular Activities: All activities will be cancelled beginning Wednesday and will resume Monday, April 6th. This is subject to change. During this time, there will be no contests, weight training, conditioning, practices, or any related activities.

Prom: The Etowah High School Prom has been rescheduled to a date in May.

Field Trips: Effectively immediately and through April 30, all field trips are cancelled. Some of these can be rescheduled while others cannot. Please contact your local school administrator and/or the teacher(s) that are conducting the trip for specific details.

School Work: No school work will be required during this time; however, schools may send home packets or online activities with your child that can assist in the learning process. The packets and work are optional. Please help keep your child engaged in some form of learning during the closure period.

Due to the State of Emergency declaration, the missed days will not be required to be made up.

We want you to know that we are following the guidance of the Alabama Department of Public Health, Alabama Department of Education, and our local Gadsden/Etowah County Emergency Management Agency in dealing with the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Please be patient and understanding as we are working on the details as quickly and thoroughly as possible. During these difficult times, it is important that we all work together to keep our students safe. We will continue to update information as it is received.

Sincerely,

Jeff Colegrove Superintendent
