Name_______________________________ Date_______________AP EURO AP European History Final Project- 2020Directions: As a culminating project for AP Euro you and a partner (or two) will be researching a current issue facing Europe. Your task will be to write a letter to the governing body of the European Union to present your argument or your findings. This letter, in addition to a google slides presentation, will count as an exam grade for the fourth quarter.Issues Facing Europe: You may choose from any of the following issues facing modern Europe or you may choose another issue as long as you run it by me first. Exit from the EU. Choose a major country of Europe (France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, etc.) and make an argument whether or not your country should remain in the EU or leave it. Your argument should be centered on social, political, and economic reasons to either leave orstay in the EU. Questions to consider: How has the EU impacted your country economically? What would the political impact of either staying or leaving the EU be? If you choose Great Britain you may make the argument pre- Brexit vote Refugee Crisis. Factors in the Middle East have led to an influx in refugees seeking safety across Europe. Some countries such as Germany have attempted to welcome refugees as much as possible; Angela Merkel has come under fire by some of the German public as a result. Some, like Sweden initially welcomed refugees but eventually had to stop accepting refugees due to overcrowding cities. Italy has ongoing issues with the Roma. You must choose a European country and lay out either the argument for or against accepting refugees. Consider the humanitarian impact of either accepting or denying refugees form the Middle East. Rise of Hyper-Nationalism and Populism. In recent European elections in countries such as France, the Netherlands hyper nationalist, populist candidates such as Marine Le Pen and Geert Wilders have risen to leading contenders in their countries election. For this issue you will take a look at the platforms of these candidates for reference and determine whether or not this new wave of hyper-nationalism and populism is a path to success or disaster for Europe. For this option you may choose a country to frame your specific arguments for or against this brand of politics. Make an argument either for or against this style of politics as a viable solution moving forward in Europe. Terrorism in France/Burqa Ban- The movement to limit women wearing headscarves and Muslim veils, such as the burqa and niqab, has been growing in?Europe?for more than a decade. Now the European court of justice, the EU’s highest court, has ruled that employers can ban staff from wearing headscarves, its first decision on the issue of employees wearing visible religious symbols at work.Scandinavian Socialism/AKA “The Welfare State- ?This includes a comprehensive?welfare state?and multi-level?collective bargaining?based on the economic foundations of free-market?capitalism, with a high percentage of the workforce? HYPERLINK "" \o "Labour unions" unionised?and a large percentage of the population employed by the?public sector?(roughly 30% of the work force). The Nordic model began to gain attention after?World War II. Please note: Many Americans imagine that "welfare state" means the U.S. welfare system on steroids. Actually, the Nordics scrapped their American-style welfare system at least 60 years ago, and substituted universal services, which means everyone—rich and poor—gets free higher education, free medical services, free eldercare, etc. These services are funded by higher rates of taxation on the wealthier citizens. Comparison of Responses to Covid 19-A; Western European countries have been impacted by the Covid 19 virus, both economically and socially, but the European gov’t have responded differently to this pandemic. Choose two nations with v. different approaches: Examine how these nations’ national identities have contributed to their manner of response. Provide examples of how these responses differ, and include the outcomes of these two varied approaches.Letter Instructions: One page single spaced maximum.
