Over the course of two festivals, Granite Noir has progressed from an idea, to one of Scotland’s main literature festivals and one of the UK’s main crime fiction festivals.Granite Noir is a partnership between Aberdeen Performing Arts, Aberdeen City Libraries, Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives and The Belmont Filmhouse, with Aberdeen Performing Arts acting as lead producer. The core of the festival’s programme of author conversations is contracted to a freelance programmer, while Aberdeen Performing Arts and other festival partners manage the festival’s special events, commissions, walks, exhibitions etc. We manage the marketing, PR and most of the delivery of the festival, while Waterstones provide a festival book stall and book sales at every event. The overarching theme of Granite Noir is to explore the enduring appeal of stories that plunge us into the heart of darkness, questioning what it is that makes Noir so compelling as well as exploring the ‘Northern Phenomenon’ in Noir through a programming strand showcasing the best of literary crime fiction talent from Scotland and Scandinavia. It is a festival for readers, writers and lovers of crime fiction of all ages. Granite Noir is a festival that also commissions new work, often using the UNESCO recognised Aberdeen city and Aberdeenshire archives for inspiration. The festival programme features events and workshops for all ages and provides a high-profile platform for the work of regional writers through our Locals in the Limelight programming strand which places Aberdeen writers alongside nationally recognised crime fiction authors.
