Welcome to Chemistry Class

Welcome to Chemistry Class!

You are beginning an investigation of the exciting world of matter and energy. Through labs, readings, projects, discussions, and homework you will examine the important theories and concepts of chemistry and their impact on daily life.

Our OBJECTIVES for the course are to:

• Learn and understand basic chemical terms and principles

• Learn to think scientifically – logically and critically

• Develop lab techniques – observing, recording, analyzing, and writing

• Recognize chemical principles in everyday life

• Increase study skill related to science – reading, writing, math

• Develop an appreciation – and maybe a love – for chemistry

• Learn to learn on your own

• Help each other learn

• What are your objectives?

In order for us to achieve these goals, we must work hard. I will be here to help you in any way that I can but you must also do your part. You are EXPECTED to:

• Be on time and prepared every day with pen, notebook (I recommend a looseleaf notebook), calculator, and reference table

• Take notes and participate actively in class

• Respect everyone in the class

• Do work on time and to the best of your ability

The GRADING SYSTEM for this class is:

• Tests (at least three per marking period 50%

• Quizzes (at least one per week) 25%

• Labs (at least one per week) 20%

• Homework (every night) 5%

Make up work for absences should be done within a week of getting back (not quizzes).

Points will be taken off for late labs but HW will not be accepted late.

Assignment sheets will be given out at the beginning of the week (and posted on my website). They will list HW, labs, class topic, quizzes, tests, and due dates.
