“The Devil and Tom Walker” Project - Mrs. Floyd's English

Here’s our opportunity to have some fun with American romantic literature. Read the story “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving and follow the steps, get creative and prove how well you can work together as a class. There is a prize in it for the class’ project that is voted the best!

Step #1: Read the short story “The Devil and Tom Walker” in your textbook on page 110 (I.R.); page 320 (text).

Step #2: As you read, keep these instructions handy. The back of the page is numbered for you, 1 – 26. List the 26 most important facts from the story. These facts can be characters, descriptions of places, events, plot twists, morals, etc.

Step #3: As a class, we must decide which 26 items from everyone’s Step #2 are truly the most important. As you offer suggestions, IN AN ORDERLY FASHION, you might want to think about doing #1 then #26; #2 then #25; #3 then #24; and so on. You have to make sure that you have enough numbers AND enough information for all 26 lines. YOU WILL BE GETTING A GRADE ON YOUR COOPERATIVE PARTICIPATION…EVERYONE MUST CONTRIBUTE THEIR IDEAS, EVEN IF THEY DON’T MAKE THE FINAL LIST.

Step #4: Assign a letter of the alphabet to each line as follows: 1=A, 2=B. 3=C, 4=C and so on. Now each person in the class must sign-up for one letter/number.

*Right about now you are probably wondering what you are going to be doing. Here’s the scoop: As a class, you are writing a children’s ABC book version of “The Devil and Tom Walker.” Your story will have exactly 26 pages and only 26 sentences. Each sentence in the book will begin with the corresponding letter of the alphabet.

Step #5: Each person will get a piece of paper to design their book page. Determine whether your book will have horizontal or vertical pages. Use markers, colored pencils, etc. GET CREATIVE! If there are more people in the class, assign the extras to do a title page, an About the Author page and/or back page. Otherwise, find an eager artist to do the cover page for the class.

All pages are DUE next class!!! We will put the books together at the beginning of next class and have the vote the following class. All pages MUST be included. If someone forgot a page at home, didn’t do their part or is absent, you will have to figure out, as a class, how to cover his/her portion of the final project.

Your grade will include:

|Grading Criteria |Points |

|Active participation in Steps 1-4 |50 |

|Your Page exhibits creativity, color, content, and effort** |50 |

***PROOFREAD!!!!! Correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation will count toward your final grade!
