Laurie BairdCase Studies 10.1 - 10.2 - 10.3AIS 4081 Leadership Theory and PracticeApril 7, 2013Case 10.1 - Anonymous Servant LeadersQuestions: 1)How do the donors' behavior fit into Liden, Wayne, , et al.'s (2008) seven characteristics of servant behavior?Conceptualizing - sifting through the problems of a down economy and a community that was failing and losing people...the donors knew they had to address the issue from early ages by targeting the kindergarteners for college thoughts and ideasEmotional Healing - the anonymity of the donors is difficult to connect with the emotional healing concept...however the monetary enormity...is what was needed first and foremost to get this community up and running. I believe it was just "known" that people cared or they would not have put their earnings forward for such a project. Putting Followers First - The defining characteristic of servant leadership! The donors cared enough to put the students first in their lives to create a project so large to benefit so many.Helping Followers Grow and Succeed - The donors gave a HUGE hand up with the monies raised for the scholarships for the students. Family that could not even think about college can now think and plan to afford the other costs associated with college. Behaving Ethically - by allowing all students to benefit - creates a sense of completeness for the community. There should be no child left without at least the opportunity to go to college. The ethics involved here would be all clear and concise since there is no "us versus them" mentality - everyone should be a winner in this scenario. Empowering - the donors are allowing the students the freedom to be independent with some responsibility. By giving the students the scholarships....the students in turn should strive to succeed in college. Creating Value for the Community - This broad-spectrum idea should help nurture and grow this community. The students will hopefully return the favor to other children as they grow in their professional careers. Instead of moving out of a depressed area - the students may be able to revitalize the community with the generosity of the donors being the catalyst to start the whole process.2)The effectiveness of servant leadership is related to whether followers are open to it. Do you see any aspects of the Kalamazoo Promise that could make it problematic for some people in the Kalamazoo community? A couple ideas come into mind for me with regard to the Kalamazoo Promise. First and foremost and was mentioned in the case in the book, is the cost of college OUTSIDE of tuition. There are so many costs associated with college and not everyone can cover those costs. Another problem they might encounter...is that not every child is meant to go to college...some students would thrive and prosper in the trades, where hands on training is what is necessary, not college book training. Keeping everyone open and honest on the true spending of the monies could be a problem. One would hope the followers would see the generosity of this type of gift and fulfill their portion of the promise...however human nature does sometimes fail. 3)Based on the model of servant leadership (Figure 10.1), how would you assess the outcomes of the Kalamazoo Promise? That is, how did the promise affect follower performance and growth, as well as the organizational performance of the Kalamazoo Public Schools, and what was the impact of the Promise on the greater Kalamazoo community? The Promise was a catalyst for bringing together the disparate socioeconomic and ethnic communities within a city (Northouse page 238). There was a bit of a riff between the private schools and the public schools as more people pulled their children out of the private schools in order to benefit from the Kalamazoo Promise. Case 10.2 - Doctor to the PoorQuestions:1)Would you characterize Paul Farmer as a servant leader? Explain your answer. According to the chart on page 224 (Table 10.1), Paul would be a servant leader. He shows virtually all the characteristics across the table. Anywhere from developing people, sharking leadership to empowerment, trust Voluntary subordination, Humility and almost all the other key characteristics of servant leadership. Paul has dedicated his life to helping the poorest of the poor and continues to do so and will most probably have a legacy after he is gone.2)Putting others first is the essence of servant leadership. In what way did Paul Farmer put others first? The schedule that Paul kept during his college and training years had to be grueling to go to Haiti so many times. He put the needs of the people before his creature comforts by sleeping in a basement and traveling for many months out of the year. I am sure his timing for college was lengthened due to his travel and help trips he made. The growth of his Partners in Health (PIH) is a success and continues to grow today. Paul gave up many comforts to help others.3)Another characteristic of a servant leader is getting followers to serve. Who were aul's followers, and how did they become servants to his vision. Paul had donors (wealthy donors) who stepped up to help him with his vision for PIH. The growth of the organization has gotten to 11,000 employees by 2009. These people would be followers of Paul Farmer. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was instrumental in getting PIH up and running. 4)What role do you think Paul's childhood had in his development as a servant leader?Paul grew up poor and when he started to become educated, he knew he wanted to help the poor. Little did he know that his life "seemed idyllic" compared to the Haitian immigrants. Paul knew from an early age he wanted to help these people. When his organization became more successful, he broke out into other poor countries to spread his knowledge to improve health conditions. Case 10.3 - Servant Leadership Takes FlightQuestions:1)What type of servant leader behaviors did Herb Kelleher exhibit in starting the airline? What about Colleen Barrett?According to the table on page 224 (Table 10.1), there are many behaviors that apply to Herb Kelleher. Developing people. This is apparent when Mr. Kelleher groomed his secretary to grow with the company and become a major player in the development of the company policies. Mr. Kelleher shared leadership, he valued people, provided leadership and he built the community of the Southwest Airlines employees and then transferred all the goodwill back to the customers and the shareholders. Along the table there were also traits such as: Consulting and involving others, empowerment, trust, humility, vision, courage, accountability, and stewardship. The example of Mr. Kelleher shows a very successful man with a servant leadership style that grew his company to benefit all areas of the operations of the company. Colleen Barrett learned from the bottom up and knows that the Golden Rule will win over customers in so many ways.2)How do the leaders of Southwest Airlines serve others? What others are they serving?Southwest Airlines follows the "Golden Rule" attitude for their customers. By doing so - it crosses over to all aspects of their business chain.3)Southwest Airlines emphasizes the Golden Rule. What role does the Golden Rule play in servant leadership? Is it always a part of servant leadership? Discuss. "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you".....The Golden Rule. By managing with this concept, the example given in the book shows how the flight attendant helped the woman traveling with children obtain food on a very long layover. I am sure the attendant would have wanted someone to do the same for her in a similar situation. The case also states how everyone on the plane benefited from her helpfulness. 4)Based on Figure 10.1 describe the outcomes of servant leadership at Southwest Airlines, and how follower receptivity may have influenced those outcomes.Follower receptivity is a factor that appears to influence the impact of servant leadership on outcomes such as personal and organizational job performance. Follower receptivity concerns the question, "Do all employees show a desire for servant leadership?" According to the case, the whole company follows the Golden Rule as the company motto. If you want to work at Southwest Airlines, I believe it is important to take this motto to heart. At every level with people following this motto, Southwest has posted a profit for 35 consecutive years. ................
