Seminar Guidelines Evidence-based Practice (EBP)
Objectives:
1. Define evidence-based practice, including its 5-steps.
2. Explain the differences between evidence-based practice, nursing research, and research utilization.
3. Assess your clinical environment for support for evidence-based practice.
4. Determine current research priorities and future themes from the NINR website ().
5. Describe the role of the baccalaureate nurse in EBP.
6. Utilize the website for the National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) . as resource for evidence based practice.
Class discussion:
A. Present to your seminar group an evidence-based practice guideline applicable to your practice area using The National Guideline Clearinghouse to retrieve evidence-based guidelines.
B. Identify a current guideline appropriate to your practice area that is NOT being implemented. Explain why it is not appropriate for the patient population, or how you would propose a change in practice based on the guideline to your preceptor and/or staff.
C. Journal readings (see below)

1. Melnyk, B., & Fineout-Overholt, E. (2002). Key steps in implementing
evidence-based practice: Asking compelling, searchable questions and searching for the best evidence. Pediatric Nursing, 22(3), 262-266.
2. Select one article from the following in preparation for class discussion:

e. Youngblut, I., & Brooten, D. (2001) Evidence-based practice: Why is it important? AACN Clinical Issues, 12, 468-476.
3. Select a refereed journal article related to a clinical question or issue on your unit to discuss with preceptor and classmates.
