Before slavery being black or white wasn't really a concept. White slave owners created this idea of race to justify their actions by saying that black people were animals and not as superior as white people. Still to this day black people are dealing with the race issues because many white people today think they are superior. While in reality there really is no difference between the races other than phenotypic characteristics such as skin color and hair type.

Slavery was one of the causes of the American Civil War, which has shaped this nation more than perhaps any other national experience. The addition of slavery actually opened the door for what we know to be the great melting pot.

The legacy of slavery has benefited every white person in this country--directly and personally. In a very gross analogy, if you run a series of foot races over 300 years but prevent 13 percent of the participants from learning how to run for 180 years and then give them concrete sneakers for another 80 years--but allow them full access for 40 years, it will take the 13 percent quite a few races to be competitive because the other 87 percent advanced their skills by practice and repetition.

In the end, I think slavery actually brought Whites and Blacks together in the US. If there hadn't been slavery, the African American population in the US would have been much smaller and therefore more segregated (i.e. segregated by oceans rather than neighborhoods). Also, if they remained in Africa, they would have a better chance of living in a poorer and more war-torn country.
