My FNP Portfolio - Welcome

Essential I.?Practice from Sciences and HumanitiesThis essential focuses on the integration of scientific findings and knowledge from nursing, biopsychosocial fields, genetics, public health, quality improvement, and organizational sciences to improve nursing care within diverse patient populations and settings. Application of this essential is evident in various academic and clinical works throughout my time at King. The first example of how I met this essential is a case study that was written on a pediatric patient. This patient was seen in her homeland of Ethiopia. I was able to incorporate knowledge from evidenced based practices, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and humanities in order to develop appropriate diagnosis, treatment plan, and follow up care that will improve patient outcomes and quality of life of this patient. I was able to incorporate this patient’s community into the plan of care design as well as the delivery of care. The second example is a research paper on leprosy. The compilation of the paper utilizes knowledge and findings from nursing science, translational science, humanities, and public health in order to develop an understanding of this disease, progression, and complications both on the body as well as psychosocially. This paper allows for a better understanding of this disease process that is not commonly seen in this region of the world and better prepares the masters level nurse to identify and treat this disease in global health settings. The third example is a discussion board that was written on radiculopathy and neuropathic pain. Information from research articles was synthesized to determine differentiating presentation of symptoms between radiculopathy and neuropathic pain. This information provides clinical reasoning to guide the assessment and intervention in these disease processes. The final example is a SOAP note that was done on a women’s health patient. This patient was assessed, diagnosed, and treated for a sexually transmitted infection. The care provided was based on information gathered from nursing sciences including evidenced based practices which was then integrated with clinical reasoning and the synthesizing of evidence to determine appropriate diagnosis and interventions. These examples meet the ANA Code of Ethics Provision 1: The nurse practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes of every person. I was able to show compassion, respect, promote health, and instilled worth in each patient situation. I kept an open, honest dialogue with each patient to ensure respect and trust was maintained throughout their care. My strengths within this essential include the ability to integrate scientific findings and knowledge from various sources into the delivery of care within multiple diverse patient groups and settings. I am competent in utilizing clinical reasoning to guide the assessment and intervention of multiple disease processes. I am able to synthesize evidence to ensure appropriate diagnosis and interventions are given to optimize patient outcomes within diverse groups and settings. My weakness lies in the area of genetics and fully understanding the pathophysiology surrounding these disorders. The pathophysiology class as well as the pediatric course helped to expand my knowledge and understanding in these areas. I also lacked adequate knowledge of how to effectively integrate sciences from the biopsychosocial field to improve nursing care. I now have a greater understanding of how culture, environment, family, and personal experiences play a role in the health and illnesses of individuals. ................
