THE PROMPTArthur Miller did not choose to end The Crucible in the happiest of ways, but the ending certainly serves a purpose. John may have been executed as an innocent man, but his sacrifice is also instrumental in defeating the corrupt courts, bringing the witch trials to an end, and earning the utmost love and respect from Elizabeth. That said, the story and the Proctors’ relationship with each other could have played out much differently. This essay explores what might have happened if John or Elizabeth acted differently in three key situations. Examine what life would have been like for the Proctors if Elizabeth had divorced John after first learning of the affair. Examine what their lives would be like if Elizabeth told the truth and John was punished as an adulterer. Examine what their lives would be like if both confessed to the crime of witchcraft. To be able to examine these possibilities, you first will have to read two online articles, “The Puritan Divorce Allows Escape from the Chain of Matrimony” and “What Options Did an Accused Witch Have in Salem?” These articles provide insight on how the Puritan laws and customs addressed divorce, punishments for certain crimes, and people with bad reputations.THE ESSAY STRUCTUREWrite a five-paragraph explanatory essay that uses facts from both articles and details from the play to examine each of these three scenarios (ABOVE)). In your explanations, consider how Elizabeth and John would have viewed each other differently, how the rest of Salem would have viewed them, what other punishments John or both could have faced, how others may have been affected by these scenarios. Your essay must be structured as follows:I.) an introduction paragraph that includes:a. an opening statement or hook (could be a quote, anecdote, bold statement, rhetorical question, etc.)b. a couple background statements about The Crucible, John, and Elizabeth to establish contextc. a closing thesis statement that sets up your body paragraphs: (example stems)If the Proctors divorced they would have _________________, if John was punished for adultery they would have _________________, and if they confessed to witchcraft they would have ________________.If the Proctors ended their marriage in divorce, faced an adultery sentence, or lived on as confessed witches, then ___________________________________________.By divorcing John, telling the truth in court, or confessing to witchcraft with John, Elizabeth could have either _______________________, __________________________, or ________________________.(Or some other variation that makes it clear what each paragraph will be about) II.) You must have three body paragraphs (one per scenario) that each use details from the articles and the play to support your explanation. You must use at least two facts from the articles and one quote from the play in each body paragraph. Information from the articles and quotes from the play must also be cited in-text, even if you are not using direct quotes.III.) You must have a conclusion paragraph that includes:a restatement of your thesis or recap of the main consequences for each scenario.a parting thought that gives the essay a sense of closure, perhaps in the form of your own commentary about how Miller chose to end the play, what you would have rather seen happen based on your examinations, or even a clever tie-in to your opening statement. Whatever you write in the conclusion must not include any new information that you have not already addressed in some way. Plagiarism occurs when you try to take credit for work or ideas that are not your own. Copying another student’s work or using information from another source without giving proper credit is considered plagiarism. For this reason, you must credit any sources from which you have taken any information. When citing a source in the text, either provide attribution as part of the sentence itself, as in “According to …” or simply place the first word from the citation for that source in parentheses at the end of the sentence but before the period. If citing the textbook, you must also place the page number inside the parentheses. If you omit words from a direct quote, you need to insert an ellipsis (…) in place of the omitted portion.Last name(s) 2Works CitedBrooks, Rebecca Beatrice, and Rebecca Beatrice Brooks. “What Options Did an Accused Witch Have in Salem?” History of Massachusetts Blog, 11 May 2019, , Leslie. “The Puritan Divorce Allows Escape From the Chain of Matrimony.” New England Historical Society, 10 May 2019, , Arthur. I have already provided you with the source information. For future research assignments you will need to enter each source you use into to get its citation. Notice that the page number heading on the right-hand side appears as it does on the other pages of your essay. The page is titled as shown here, and both double-spaced type and Times New Roman 12 font are still used. Each citation starts with a non-indented line while each subsequent line of the citation is indented. Sources are listed alphabetically by the first word that appears in each citation. You must type your own Works Cited page.
