MINI-SYNTHESIS PAPER #1

Unit 1- Sociological Perspectives

Using all 3 of the readings from this unit, write a 1-2 page typed “mini-synthesis” paper that discusses the following:

What is the “sociological imagination” or sociological perspective? What is meant when sociologists say that the “sociological imagination” helps us grasp the relationship between an individual and their society?

Keep the following points in mind as you write:

1. How do the readings correspond or relate to one another? What common themes are evident?

2. Discuss Mills’ notion of personal troubles and public issues.

• Use at least one example from the Romero reading to explain how an individual “trouble” can become a public “issue.”

• Use at least one example from your own life to illustrate the “intersection of biography and history” as discussed by Romero.

3. How does Johnson use trees as an example of a sociological concept?

• What is one instance or example of something you have personally encountered that connects to what Johnson was talking about?

**Please be sure to cite the author and page number for quotations and paraphrases from the readings, i.e. (Mills, p.2)
