|Tell students that they are going to learn how to tell the difference between fact and opinion. |

|Explain the differences between fact and opinion, using examples. Explain why it is important to know the difference between these two types of statements. |

|Guided Practice |

|Using the PowerPoint slides*, students will identify statements as either facts or opinions. |

|Independent Practice |

|Have students write 3 examples of factual statements and 3 examples of opinions. |

| |

|Closing Activity |

|Have each student share one fact or opinion statement with the class by reading an example aloud. |

|Have the other students guess whether each statement is a fact or an opinion. |

|Procedure: |

|Ask students to think of a topic that they would like to write about. |

|Have students write an article on their topic that includes both facts and opinions. |

|Allow time for students to share their work with the class. |

|Procedure: |

|Brainstorm with students a list of topics they are interested in. |

|Ask students to write 2 facts and 2 opinions about the topic of their choice. |

|Allow time for students to share their examples with the class. |
