Concept 1: Elements of Literature

Identify, analyze, and apply knowledge of the structures and elements of literature.

PO 1. Analyze the author’s use of literary elements:

• theme (moral, lesson, meaning, message, view or comment on life),

• point of view (e.g., first vs. third, limited vs. omniscient),

• characterization (qualities, motives, actions, thoughts, dialogue, development, interactions),

• setting (time of day or year, historical period, place, situation), and

• plot (exposition, major and minor conflicts, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution).

PO 2. Analyze the author’s use of figurative language, including simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, symbolism, allusion, and imagery in a literary selection.

PO 3. Compare (and contrast) the illustration of the same theme in two different literary genres, using their structural features as the basis for the comparison (e.g., novel and play, poem, short story).

PO 4. Identify how an author's choice of words and imagery sets the tone and advances the work's theme.

General Goal(s):

Students will use Inspiration 8.0 to create a character chart to compare the personalities of two characters in the novel, A Separate Peace.

Specific Objectives:

• The student will analyze the novel for examples of indirect and direct characterization for the characters of Finny and Gene.

• The student will create an Inspiration 8.0 graphic organizer to compare the personalities and goals of the two boys.

• The student will use graphics in Inspiration 8.0 to depict the changes in the mood of the characters in the story as it progresses.

Required Materials:

• Computer for each student

• Copy of novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles.

Step-By-Step Procedures:

1. Read at least to chapter 7 in A Separate Peace.

2. In Inspiration 8.0, create a graphic organizer depicting the personalities of Gene and Finny. Must have at least 5 examples (direct quotes, including page numbers) using direct characterization, and 5 examples (direct quotes, including page numbers) using indirect characterization for each character.

3. In the graphic organizer, use visual graphics to depict the mood of the story and the personality (symbolism) of the character as the story is developed.

  Assessment Based On Objectives:

• Student web will be evaluated using a teacher created rubric.
