Making Inferences

Observation – a detailed examination of an object or event using your five senses

Examples of observations include:

• The caterpillar is 5 cm long.

• There were 15 butterflies in the yard.

• The red liquid turned yellow.

• The book has a mass of 600 grams.

An inference is a possible explanation of an observation.

1st Example: You observe a cake with candles on it.

Possible inference: It is a birthday cake.

2nd Example: You observe someone smiling

Possible inference: The person is happy.

Possible inference: The person is getting paid to smile.
