“GROUP WORK”

December 2009, Reception: December 4, 6-8

Khaki Gallery Boston is pleased to present “Group Work,” an exhibition of works by 36 artists. With this exhibition, Khaki is introducing 13 new artists: Simeen Ishaque-Farhat, Lara Loutrel, Ellen Schon, Steve Miller, Lisa Sawlit, Lou Jones, Vittorio Mezzano, Michael Benari, Will Kerr, Salvatore Schiciano, Tom Stocker, Erik Hansen, and Silke Hase. The 23 previously exhibited artists at Khaki Galleries Boston or Wellesley are: Barry Osbourn, Maya Dreilinger, Wally Gilbert, Mark Ostow, Nancy Wyllie, John Martino, Jennifer Formica, Angela Devenney, Elizabeth Jerome Applbaum, Lydia Panas, Nahid Khaki, Luke Snyder, John Steck Jr., Mara Brod, Soroush Payandeh, Gary Duehr, Craig Perini, and Maria Janosko, Michael Itkoff, James Paradis, Liz Shepherd, Barbara Cone, and Kevin Van Aelst.

The “Group Work” is not based on any theme but rather is curated as a whole for a harmonious visual aesthetic. The works featured in this exhibition are from a wide range of mediums, including color and black and white photography, painting, collage, drawing, ceramic, sculpture, silk screen and etching.

The diverse styles of art featured in this exhibition range from classical realism -- in drawing and painting by Lisa Sawlit and portraits by Salvatore Schiciano -- to abstractions by Barry Osbourn and Will Kerr. In addition, there are pop art style paintings of Marilyn Monroe by Tom Stocker, Islamic textual drawings by Simeen Ishaque-Farhat and abstract collage drawings by Lara Loutrel. In photography, there is a diverse range of styles even in the same genre. In portraiture photography, there is a black and white portrait of U.S. Sen. John Kerry by Mark Ostow and “Distressed Memories,” which are dreamlike portraits by Lou Jones. In contrast, there are color environmental portraits by Lydia Panas, Michael Itkoff and Maya Dreilinger. Steve Miller’s surrealistic portraits of “vintage dolls” in nature are also intriguing examples of portrait photography.

In the genre of “street photography,” there are black and white photographs by John Martino and Michael Benari. John Steck Jr.’s color photograph of parking lots, Mara Brod shot of a blue house in Somervile, Elizabeth Jerome Applbaum’s night shots, Gary Deuhr’s Italian street scene, Vittorio Mezzano’s museum shot, Nancy Wyllie’s photograph of a prison cell, and Craig Perini black and white image are examples of urban landscapes. Moreover, the color photographs by Wally Gilbert, Jennifer Formica, and Angela Devenny are great examples of photo-based images of objects like flies and doors as intriguing abstract designs. In the category of sculpture, Pakistani-born artist Simeen Ishaque- Farhat pairs the life size hollow female figure in Islamic white veil with black calligraphic text. Ellen Schon also works with the subject of female form in her stoneware sculptural piece “Birth of Venus”. The size of the art works displayed in this exhibition range from 3.75” x 4.5” painting of “George Orwell” by Salvatore Schiciano to Lisa Sawlit’s 48”x80” photograph of “Venus Humanitas”.
