Resources to Aid the Development of Independent Working

In a busy classroom children need to be enabled to work confidently, and tackle given tasks more independently. The resources contained within this document are designed to be used with all children, not just those considered to have special educational needs. Resources such as these encourage independent working skills, consequently enhancing classroom management.

Letters and Sounds Word Lists

These lists correspond with those in Letters and Sounds. There are separate lists for each phase split into the decodable and tricky words. The lists can be used as assessment check sheets or as ‘flash cards’ for reading and spelling games. When copied and laminated, cut the lists into individual words. Children can be given limited numbers of words corresponding to those they are focusing on for either reading or spelling. Use the flash cards to play reading/spelling track games and board games. (If the child reads/spells the word correctly they can roll the dice to move round the board.)

Letters and Sounds Wordbanks

These banks match the lists within Letters and Sounds Phases 1 - 6. They are designed to be used when children undertake any form of writing. Copied on to card and laminated these wordbanks can last indefinitely. It is a good idea to place a range of appropriate wordbanks on children’s tables when they are writing. This will allow children to access a wordbank at their own level without having to differentiate explicitly. Children should be ‘trained’ to refer to the wordbanks as their first port of call when undertaking writing activities. It can gradually become an expectation that words appearing on the appropriate wordbank should always be written correctly within the children’s work.

These wordbanks can also be enlarged to make a large scale wordbank for displaying on the classroom wall.

Topic Wordbanks

The topic wordbanks have been designed to use alongside the letters and sounds wordbanks. When undertaking writing projects within the context of topic work children can refer to the relevant wordbank. Words on these banks range from simple topic words to more complex subject specific words. As such the topic wordbanks should be considered as whole class resources not just for those children with additional needs.

These wordbanks can also be enlarged to make a large scale wordbank for displaying on the classroom wall.

Personal Cue Cards

These cards can be laminated and placed within credit card holders as a different way for children to access resources. This method can be very useful for older children who have ‘outgrown’ the use of the wordbanks and cue cards. I have enclosed a number of blank credit cards for individual information to be entered on.

Cue Cards

These cards can be used for reference purposes for children who have difficulty with sound/symbol correspondence. It will be possible to target children’s specific difficulties with the relevant cue card. For example, a child with vowel sound confusion may benefit from access to a vowel cue card when writing.

The cue cards can also be used to make Snap or Pair games. The cards can be enlarged and then laminated and cut into separate picture and letter cards. Games such as Snap and Pairs can then be played.
