American Idol® Excel Activity

American Idol® has truly become one of America’s biggest and most watched television shows. With its debut in the summer of 2002, this show, based on Britain’s Pop Idol, became an instant success. Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the Dick Clark of our day, American Idol® grows bigger and bigger each season. The show’s three judges, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson have become household names, along with the winning contestants from each season

30 American Idol® viewers were surveyed to find out who their favorite American Idol® winner was from seasons 1-5. The following activity illustrates how spreadsheets can be used to create a pie chart that illustrates this distribution.

Instructions:

1. Create a NEW spreadsheet.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, the font should be set to Arial, size 10.

2. Type the data as shown below:

3. Rename Sheet1 AI Favorites. Delete Sheet2 and Sheet3.

4. Change the font size of cell A1 to 16 point.

5. Format the width of column A to 17.0 and left align.

6. Format the width of column B to 21.3 and center align.

7. Merge and center the title across A1 and B1.

8. Bold the information in rows 1 and 3.

9. Create a pie chart as follows:

a. Select cells A1-B8

b. On the INSERT ribbon, in the Charts section, select Pie

c. Choose the 3-D Pie

d. If the chart doesn’t look correct use the Switch Row/Column on the Chart Tools Design Ribbon. Also on the Design Ribbon choose Move Chart -- add as new sheet named AI Chart.

e. On the Chart Tools Layout Ribbon edit the chart title to read AMERICAN IDOL – FAVORITE WINNERS

f. Display the legend to the right of the pie chart

g. Add Data Labels that show the Percentage (HINT: More Data Labels Options)

10. Format the Chart Area with a background color of peach (Use Shape Fill)

11. Format the colors of each piece of the pie chart as follows: (Use Shape Fill)

a. Kelly Clarkson → purple

b. Reuben Studdard → green

c. Fantasia Barrino → yellow

d. Carrie Underwood → pink

e. Taylor Hicks → turquoise

12. Format the chart’s legend background color to light blue and change the font size to 16 point.

13. Make the chart title bold, change the font size to 24, and change the font color to blue.

14. Insert a header for both the spreadsheet and chart that shows:

a. Left Section: Your Name

b. Center Section: Period

c. Right Section: File Name

15. Insert a footer for both the spreadsheet and chart that shows:

a. Center Section: Worksheet Name

b. Right Section: Page Number

16. Carefully proofread your work for accuracy

17. Save the spreadsheet as XXX – American Idol

18. Print Preview and adjust the Page Setup so that the spreadsheet and the chart each fit on one page. Set the page orientation to landscape for the chart.

19. Print a copy of the spreadsheet and the chart. Staple together and turn in.
