USING EXCEL ON THE PC

Doing a T-Test on EXCEL

1. enter data in column format.

data for first group in column A

data for second group in column B

2. click on TOOLS.

3. click on DATA ANALYSIS (under TOOLS).

4. click on t-TEST: TWO-SAMPLE ASSUMING EQUAL VARIANCES and then on OK.

5. a window should now pop up on your screen, you need to fill in the following:

variable 1 input range = location of data for variable 1 (e.g. Snail times with water) (as before, highlight the data for the input range of variable 1). Click on the small icon next to the empty cell in this window to return to your data sheet to select you input range.

variable 2 input range = location of data for variable 2 (e.g. Snail times without water) (as before, highlight the data for the input range of variable 2)

hypothesized mean difference = 0 (remember our null hypothesis assumes that the two populations are not different).

labels = turn this on if you included the data labels in your input ranges

alpha = 0.05

output range = empty range into which EXCEL will write results (as before, highlight the upper left hand cell)

6. when the window is completed, click on OK.

7. the computer will then show you the summary table for the t-test.

the values you want are the mean, variance, observations, df, t, P(T ................
................
