Writing Assignment for Anatomy and Physiology 211:
Writing Assignment for Anatomy and Physiology 211: 25 pointsComplete Assignment Due Wednesday November 9th The Writing Assignment: Students will write papers that are between 1 ? and 2 pages in length on a topic of their choice related to healthcare. This could be a short paper on a disease, a protein, a medication, what ever you like as long as it relates to healthcare, anatomy or physiology. The writing needs to be clear and easy to understand, the level of writing should be similar to that found in your Saladin textbook. Completion of this writing project will help fulfill the requirements of AP 211 as a WSU University Studies course.Library Resources Tutorial Training Sessions: You will attend and complete an exercise in lecture and will need to hand this in with your writing assignment packet. (5 points)What you need in the paper are between 1 ? and 2 pages (excluding references): Title, Introduction (a paragraph or two that discusses what the paper is about ? -1/2 pages), Body of paper (1-1 ? pages), Conclusions Section (review major points of paper that is ?-1/2 pages), and a Literature Cited list (this will be in addition to the 1 ? - 2 pages of text Single Spaced). Use 1-inch margins, single (NOT DOUBLE) spacing and 12 size print font. Your paper needs to have a discreet SECTION that starts with each of the previously mentioned Heading items in bold. You need to include the source of the information used in your paper. If a fact appears in your paper it needs to include the reference source where you obtained the fact. If it is a direct quote, put the fact in direct quotes, if it is paraphrased into your own words (best) it still needs the reference source listed. You are welcome to include illustrations or diagrams as long as they are cited if copied from another source, but this does not count towards the required 1 ?-2 page text length. Direct Quotes: In your paper you should paraphrase, don’t use direct quotes, are limited to the use of not more than one single direct “quotation “Prior to handing in the FINAL draft (the only version to be graded) you must have three different people read your rough draft and make edits to three separate rough drafts. Have the editor write their name on the draft and the date it was edited. Your paper needs to have at least 6 editorial comments per page for it to count as “edited” a “good” editor will provide many more than this. If you write “perfectly” then the editor needs to point out the parts of paper that are “well written”. If the paper is difficult to read, the editor needs to point out parts that are hard to understand. You need to include at least 6 different sources (references), three of which need to be obtained using using either PubMed or ProQuest (staple two copies of the first page of these papers and the ProQuest or MedLine citation that you used to identify the paper when you hand it final draft). Three of the six sources need to have been published more recently than January 1, 2010. Websites can be used, but only two can be used as sources. Personal interviews are wonderful and should be sited but do not count as part of the six published references for this paper. You are welcome to have more than six references in your paper and this will make it look very nice indeed. Remember also that ProQuest and PubMed are Not the source, they only direct you to the journal that is the source of the information (do not cite PubMed or ProQuest in your paper or references section.PubMed/ ProQuest: these are a very important literature search tools that looks for papers that have been published on the topic of your interest. The websites will show you how to do a search. PubMed gives a free abstract (paragraph that discusses paper content) and “may” give you a free link to the full paper itself. The library staff will discuss how to do this kind of search at the informational meeting and how to find materials in the WSU library you have identified from your PubMed search. ProQuest is a similar tool whose search is directed more towards topics directly related to nursing. Other search engines exist, such as First Search and Google, but their use is not a required part of this assignment. attachProQuest Link: Link: Text and appropriate references: Cranberry juice appears to promote vasodilation in a manner similar to that associated with red wine and Concord grape juice (). Using rat vessels, it has been demonstrated in vitro and in vivo that cranberry juice vasodilates blood vessels (Wilson et al, 2000; Pg 239) at levels comparable to that associated with grape products and red wine (Folts 1998; Pg 132). “Vessel diameter and blood flow is largely determined by the production of nitric oxide (NO)”, a hormone made by an enzyme nitric oxide synthase in arterial endothelial cells (Steinberg, 2002; Pg 1089). More recently, Folts (2000; Pg 135) observed that the nitric oxide synthase activity is apparently stimulated by flavonoids in these beverages.Literature Cited: List authors alphabetically using first letter of the journal articles first author’s last name. List and number authors in alphabetical and numerical order using the format describe below for these different kinds of reference. For Scientific Journals:Lahita R, Kluger J, Drayer DE, Koffler D, Reidenberg MM. Antibodies to nuclear antigens in patients treated with procainamide or acetylprocainamide. New England Journal of Medicine 1979; Volume301 Pages:1382-1385.For books or other edited publications:Wilson T, Murphy PA, Johnson ET. Health benefits of soy isoflavones. The sources (references) also need to be listed in alphabetical order in the “Literature Cited” section at the end of your paper. If it is a direct quote form the original source, use quotation marks in your paper. A paper will look better however if you paraphrase (put in your own words) and follow this with the source of the fact. The instructor reserves the right to ask you to bring in all the sources to ensure that they are properly cited from the papers listed in the Literature Cited section of you paper. DO NOT PLAGARIZE, USE DIRECT QUOTES IF YOU USE EXACT WORDS FROM A SOURCE! (Limit one quotation in each paper)25 Total Points for the Project will be distributed as follows: WRITING ASSIGNMENT WILL ONLY ACCEPTED IN A FOLDER WITH YOUR NAME(S) ON THE FRONTThe 25 total points will be awarded for the following itemsDue Date: Wednesday November 9thth in class or at office by no later than 5pm: Deduct -5 pts if handed in late.5 points: Library and PubMed Resource In Class Assignment Sheet clearly included and stapled to front page of final draft.9 points (3 X 3 points): Are three fully edited rough drafts included and editorial comments made to your paper to improve quality?
