Transcript – Exercise and Sports Science – Articles about stretching and reducing injuryThis video will help you find journal articles in a library database for your assignment.Let's look for articles about ‘Does stretching reduce injury and improve performance?’Before searching, think of some keywords. We can use ‘stretching’ or ‘flexibility’ or ‘warm-up’ and combine those search terms with ‘injury prevention’ or ‘performance’. If you don’t get the best results from your first search, try another search with different words.Let’s try SPORTDiscus, the main Exercise Science database. Let’s do a search for ‘injury prevention’. As you enter your search terms, the database will show some other similar search terms. You may want to try these suggested terms in another search. Now we have our search results, but there are quite a few. Here are some suggestions to narrow your results. For recently published material use publication date and select 5 years. For scholarly journals go to source types and select academic journals. For English-only articles, go to Language and select English. Subject headings are listed below the journal article details. We can add a new phrase to our search. Let’s add ‘stretching’ to our search by entering the term into the search box below our first term. Our two queries are combined using the Boolean operator AND - this way our results should have BOTH concepts in the same journal article. To determine which articles you most relevant, you can view the abstract of summaries for most articles. You can read the abstracts of articles by moving the cursor over the magnifier icon or by selecting the individual title link. When you are happy with your results you can now read the articles. If you see a PDF link, that’s great, you can download the article. Otherwise, you may see a ‘FindIt’ icon, which will connect you to the article via the Library databases.LibrarySearch will show you which database holds the article. ?Under View Online, find the database that holds the article and select the link. You can now download the PDF of the article. Return to your search results. In order to expand your results, you can select additional databases to search within. By choosing the e-journals option you will be able to locate many more peer-reviewed journal articles.Do you need some more help?
