DUAL-CREDIT OPPORTUNITY - Beatrice Middle School

DUAL-CREDIT CALCULUS

Beatrice High School has partnered with Southeast Community College-Beatrice to offer a dual-credit course in Calculus. Mr. Barnard will teach the course and its curriculum is approved by Beatrice Public Schools and SCC. Assessment tools used in the classroom will be sent to a cooperating SCC instructor as necessary. If anything needs to be added to assessments that would be required by SCC, those students enrolled in the dual-credit course would participate in the extra activities. A student will earn credit through BHS and through SCC. Credit will be earned through SCC only if the student maintains an overall “C” average for the entire year of Calculus. The two semesters at BHS would be averaged together to obtain the percent/grade level.

Those students wishing to enroll as a dual-credit student will register as an SCC student and pay tuition for the course to SCC. Upon successful completion of the course, students must contact SCC to have their transcript forwarded to their college/university (if other than SCC) so that credit can be granted.

The name of the course is Calculus with Analytic Geometry I. The number of the corresponding SCC course is MATH 1600. Successful completion of the course earns 7.5 credits under the SCC quarter system, which is equivalent to 5 credits under the semester system.

(Make sure to check with the college(s) you plan to attend to determine if the credit would be accepted and how it would be accepted (fulfill a requirement or fulfill extra hours needed for a college degree) before enrolling for this dual-credit opportunity. This course may not fulfill some requirements.

(Try to find out possible options at colleges you are looking to attend. Some colleges may look at your high school transcript and see that you have attained a certain grade in Calculus. The college may ask you to take a placement exam in which you score extremely high. Your college advisor may then let you enroll in Calculus II and having attained a certain grade level in Calculus II, the college may award you college credit both for Calculus II which you took in college and for Calculus I without actually paying for Calculus I. A lot must fall exactly into place for this to happen though.

(Understand that a class by the same name at any institution will have many similarities but also some different points of emphasis. This is the case with Calculus as well. Should you pursue a college degree in a field involving various math courses, earn college credit for this course, and enroll in Calculus II, you will be prepared in that you will have the necessary foundation but may need to learn a few concepts emphasized by that college/university in their Calculus I course and, at the same time, may already have learned a few concepts that are presented in their Calculus II course.

Many BHS graduates have benefited from this dual-credit opportunity in Calculus including both those students that just needed one or even two math classes in college and those students who were pursuing a degree requiring many math classes.
