M3(H)—Geometry: Extra Credit Policy

I only offer extra credit through one primary medium—NYML contests after school. I may offer extra credit in other ways—if I do, then I will publicly announce how you can earn extra credit.

1) Extra Credit via NYML

• At six dates throughout the year, a NYML (New York Math League) contest will be offered to students. These contests always run on Tuesday afternoons once a month, after period 10.

• These contests are all 6 questions, and 30 minutes in length. Calculators are permitted.

• These questions can cover all of high school mathematics, including courses you haven’t taken yet. This means that there may be questions that you will be completely unable to do.

• Students on math team in my geometry or honors geometry classes are eligible for credit—however, if you are in Ms. Kudlash’s math team sections, you must present to me the contest paper so that I can award you the credits. Students in my math team section need not do this.

• The payoff for each contest is listed below—you will earn credits based on the number of problems you get correct on the contest.

o 0 right: 0 credits. This is to ensure that you actually do the problems and try them all.

o 1 right: 1 credit.

o 2 right: 2 credits.

o 3 right: 3 credits.

o 4 right: 4 credits.

o 5 right: 6 credits.

o 6 right (perfect score): 8 credits.

2) Redeeming Credits

• I will list on JupiterGrades in a separate statistic how many credits you have earned.

• You can redeem 4 credits to earn 1 extra credit point. This point will be applied to your exam scores—that is, if you score 34 out of 36 on an exam and 1 extra credit point, that exam is treated as if you earned 35 out of 36 points. You must redeem the credits to earn the point—I will not do so automatically for you.

• I will not accept fewer than 4 credits at a time—you must redeem credits in groups of 4 in order to earn the extra credit point for your exams. You may redeem for multiple extra credit points, so long as you redeem in sets of 4.

• You may only redeem a maximum of 2 extra credit points per marking period. This is to ensure that the extra credit doesn’t become a disproportionate part of your average. I reserve the right to change this cap, and it will not be more than 2% of the total number of test points offered during the marking period.

• Unused credits roll over—that is, they will be banked for use through the year.

If you have any questions, or wish to redeem credits, please e-mail me.
